From hearty comfort food and organic groceries to heartfelt hospitality and surprise birthday celebrations, this neighbourhood gem in USJ proves that great cafés are built on human connections.
In a dining landscape crowded with trendy concepts and fleeting food fads, discovering a place that feels genuinely welcoming can be as satisfying as finding the perfect comfort meal. Tucked away in USJ 16, 16 Degrees Coffee & Grocer is one such find—a charming café-grocer hybrid where good food, thoughtful service and community spirit come together under one roof.
For our Connect Group of eleven, it was the final gathering of 2025, a chance to share a meal, exchange stories and toast the memories of 2025. We arrived looking for a comfortable spot to unwind. We left having discovered a neighbourhood treasure that delivered far more than expected.
The café’s name is a clever nod to both its location and its signature appeal. Situated in USJ 16, it also references the cool 16°C air-conditioning setting that keeps the space delightfully comfortable. Step inside and the tropical heat quickly fades away, replaced by a calm, inviting atmosphere that encourages guests to linger over coffee, conversation and toothsome comfort food.

What sets 16 Degrees apart is its ability to wear two hats effortlessly. On one side, it is a cosy café serving a varied menu of hearty, flavour-packed dishes. On the other, it functions as a neighbourhood grocer stocked with organic vegetables and fruits. The combination creates a refreshing convenience for patrons who can enjoy a leisurely brunch before picking up groceries for the week ahead.
That spirit has since extended beyond USJ. The brand’s second venture, 16 Degrees Outpost, brings the same love of good coffee, cakes and pastries to the heart of the city—nestled within a lifestyle boutique along Jalan Panggong in Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur. Compact and purposefully curated, the Outpost is designed to welcome both tourists exploring the historic quarter and city dwellers seeking a well-crafted cup in a characterful setting. It is a natural extension of what 16 Degrees does best: creating moments of warmth and connection wherever it plants its flag.

The menu itself is designed to appeal to a broad range of tastes. Portions are generous, flavours are satisfying and the offerings strike a comfortable balance between familiar favourites and wholesome choices. Every dish that arrived at our table was prepared with care, delivering the kind of honest, unpretentious food that leaves diners feeling thoroughly content.
Yet food is only part of the story.

The heart of 16 Degrees lies in the people behind it. The café is run by the family that operates Vest Inn next door, with mother and daughter working side by side. Living just minutes away, they bring a personal touch to the business that is increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced hospitality industry. The result is an experience that feels less like visiting a commercial establishment and more like being welcomed into a family gathering.

That spirit of hospitality revealed itself most memorably during our visit.
When the owner learned that three members of our group would be celebrating birthdays within days of one another in the coming month, she responded with a gesture that transformed an enjoyable meal into a memorable occasion. Without fanfare, complimentary slices of cake appeared at the table—each a different flavour, each crowned with a single candle flickering like a small celebration of life’s simple joys.

It was a thoughtful act that cost little but meant much. In an era when personalised service is often promised but seldom delivered, the gesture stood out as a genuine expression of kindness. It was the sweet finishing note to an already satisfying dining experience, leaving everyone at the table smiling long after the candles had been blown out.

Adding to the appeal are prices that remain pleasantly reasonable and the availability of parking—something that can feel almost miraculous in certain parts of USJ. These practical advantages, combined with the café’s warm ambience and attentive service, make it easy to understand why patrons return again and again.

More importantly, 16 Degrees succeeds in creating something many cafés aspire to but few achieve: a sense of belonging. It is a place where conversations flow as easily as the coffee, where regulars are greeted like old friends, and where small gestures have a way of making a lasting impression.

Whether you’re gathering with a large group, catching up with friends over brunch, or simply seeking a quiet corner to enjoy a cup of coffee, 16 Degrees Coffee & Grocer offers the kind of experience that reminds us why neighbourhood cafés matter. It is proof that great hospitality is not about grand gestures or elaborate concepts. Sometimes, it is as simple as a warm welcome, a good meal and a slice of cake served with genuine kindness.

And in a world that often feels rushed, that may be the coolest thing of all.
