The European Court of Human Rights ruled that same-sex marriage is not a legal right. While this decision is not new, it is important to remember its significance. Natural order, common sense, scientific reports, and positive law were all used to make the decision.
Article 12 of the European Convention on Human Rights states that men and women of marriageable age have the right to marry and have children. This decision upholds the traditional definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
There have recently been rumors in Malaysia about potential legal changes that would make the country more LGBTQ-friendly. Many Malaysians are concerned about these rumors because they firmly believe in upholding traditional family values and preserving the country's cultural and religious heritage.
From an Islamic perspective, marriage is viewed as a sacred bond between a man and a woman.
As stated in the Quran, "And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought." (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21).
While same-sex marriage is not permitted under Islamic law, same-sex relationships are also prohibited in the country. Homosexual activity is a crime under Penal Code Section 377A. This law reflects Malaysian society's values, which are rooted in the country's Islamic and cultural heritage.
It is critical to remember that Islam teaches us to be compassionate to all people, regardless of their sexual orientation.
The Quran states, "And do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness." (Surah Al-Maidah 5:8).
It should also be noted that Malaysian Muslims are not the only ones who are against same-sex marriage. Other religions, including Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism, agree that marriage should only take place between a man and a woman.
We must treat everyone with dignity and respect, while also upholding the values and teachings of our religion. We cannot support or encourage same-sex relationships, which violate Islamic principles.
The newly elected PH-BN coalition government must address these concerns and reassure Malaysians that plans to make the country more LGBTQ-friendly are not in the works. The government must prioritise the interests of the majority of Malaysians and ensure that any potential legislative changes reflect the people's values and beliefs.
Finally, the Court of Human Rights ruling against same-sex marriage is consistent with Islamic and Malaysian values. While we should strive to be accepting and kind to all people, we cannot compromise the fundamental principles of our religion and culture.
As Malaysians, we must uphold the sanctity of marriage and the importance of traditional family values through the teachings of Islam and other religions in the country.
