Back in the old days, (1960s) school canteens were closed during Ramadan. It was an accepted practice. Non-Muslim pupils who did not observe fasting made their own alternative arrangements without any fuss. The Mak Chik canteen operator would take a break knowing full well sale would be low, instead she would prepare food for iftar bazaar, to supplement her income for the month.

Fast forward to 2024. A directive by the Education Ministry to keep school canteens open during Ramadan has sparked controversy, with the PAS Ulama Council criticizing it as excessive.

While the council's concern for respecting the fasting month is understandable, the issue reflects broader questions about cultural sensitivity and accommodation.

On one hand, keeping canteens open can be seen as a practical solution to ensure that non-Muslim students, who are not required to fast, have access to meals during the day. It also promotes inclusivity and understanding of different religious practices.

However, critics argue that closing canteens during Ramadan is a longstanding tradition that respects the fasting Muslims, and keeping them open could be seen as insensitive or disrespectful.

The key here is finding a balance between accommodation and respect. It's essential to educate all students about the significance of Ramadan and the importance of respecting each other's beliefs and practices.

This can be done through dialogue, cultural exchange programmes, and creating designated areas for non-Muslim students to eat, as suggested by the Ulama Council.

Ultimately, the decision should be guided by principles of mutual respect and understanding. It is a chance for schools to promote tolerance and unity among students of different backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive and harmonious learning environment.

Let's not politicise school canteens!
