Scientists have discovered that navigating unfamiliar environments triggers measurable physical changes in your hippocampus, the brain region responsible for spatial memory and learning. This happens whether you’re 25 or 75. A study tracked taxi drivers, medical students, and everyday people as they learned new routes and environments. The researchers found something remarkable: within weeks of regular navigation through unfamiliar territory, participants showed increased gray matter density in their hippocampi.
