If you’ve ever scrolled through foodie videos online, you know the kind of culinary experience that makes you think, “I need to try that!” That’s exactly what happened to us when we stumbled upon a video showcasing the roasted duck at Sun Ming Kee Restaurant in Cheras, which claimed that the duck was so juicy it could literally spurt out juice when you bite into it. Naturally, we had to put this claim to the test.

Sun Ming Kee Restaurant has been around for a long time, and judging by the never-ending queue, it’s clear that their loyal customers keep coming back for more. Don’t be intimidated by the line, though—it moves fairly quickly, as most people are there to tapau (take away) their food. The ordering process is straightforward: make your order and pay at the counter first, and then you’ll be assigned a table.

We opted for the lower-quarter duck, eager to see if it was as juicy as advertised. And let us tell you, it did not disappoint. With just one bite, it was clear why this dish was so popular. The duck leg was incredibly juicy, not dry at all, and the skin was thin and crunchy—just the way we liked it. The flavor was less gamey compared to other places, making it more enjoyable for those who might be sensitive to the strong taste that duck can sometimes have. While the taste itself was decent, the real highlight was how much better it got when paired with the accompanying sauce. It added that extra layer of flavor that elevated the entire dish.

We also decided to try their double combo rice, featuring both roasted duck and siu yuk. Just like the duck, the char siew was juicy and flavorful. However, we did find that the char siew had a bit more fat than we usually prefer. That said, if you’re a fan of fatty, melt-in-your-mouth char siew, you’ll likely enjoy this combination.

After trying everything, we rated the food a solid 7 out of 10. The juicy duck was definitely the star of the meal, and it’s worth a try if you’re in the area. However, we’d recommend tapping out rather than dining in, especially during lunchtime when the restaurant is packed with people.

If you’re on the hunt for a juicy roasted duck in Cheras, Sun Ming Kee Restaurant should be on your list!
