Scottie Scheffler will take a narrow lead into the final round of The Masters with a thrilling Sunday in store at Augusta National. A nip-and-tuck moving day saw the front of the field struggle to pull away from one another, with scoring tough as the greens dried out on a bright, breezy afternoon.
Scheffler, the 2022 winner, recovered from a mid-round wobble to birdie the last for a round of 71 and a one-shot advantage at seven-under. Collin Morikawa produced an outstanding 69 to move into outright second as he seeks a third major crown, while Max Homa remained firmly in the mix one shot further back.
Bryson DeChambeau‘s high risk game cost him as the American faded, but the American holed out from the fairway on the last to give himself hope at three-under-par. Ludvig Aberg (-4) produced another composed round of 70 to continue an excellent major debut, while Xander Schauffele, Cameron Davis and Nicolai Hojgaard are within striking distance five shots behind Scheffler.
Rory McIlroy’s quest for a long-awaited major will continue despite an improved third round, his 71 not enough to power the Northern Irishman into contention. Tiger Woods, meanwhile, had battled through 23 holes on Friday to make a record-breaking 24th consecutive cut at Augusta but could not sustain his effort, an 82 seeing him drop down the field.
