Rory McIlroy will try to salvage his bid to win the Masters on a crucial Friday at Augusta National after he fell apart towards the end of his first round to leave himself an uphill climb in pursuit of a first green jacket.
Justin Rose rolled back the years on Thursday to storm into a first-round lead but McIlroy’s pursuit of his Ryder Cup teammate unravelled in extraordinary fashion with four dropped shots on his final four holes to finish seven off the pace.
Rose, who came close to winning the green jacket in 2015 and 2017, carded a remarkable first-round score of 65 to mark his 20th appearance at Augusta, leaving the 44-year-old three clear at the top of the leaderboard. Rose made eight birdies, with a dropped shot at the 18th his only bogey of the day.
Earlier, Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, made an ominous start with a calm and controlled bogey-free round of -4. But McIlroy, looking to complete a career grand slam, continued his excellent pre-tournament form as he caught the world No 1, joining him on -4 in a share of second place with four holes to play. However, McIlroy’s hopes of gaining further ground on Rose were thwarted when he found the water on the par-five 15th, with his chip across the green running over and down into Rae’s Creek. It was followed by another double bogey on the 17th as McIlroy somehow finished at even-par, and a tie for 26th.

One gone for Justin Rose at the fifth, his par putt not dropping and having to be tapped home for a disappointing bogey having found a bunker off the tee.

Tidy stuff from Matt Fitzpatrick, bouncing back from a bogey at the first with an eagle three at No 2. Beautifully weighted, riding the camber left to right, and in it goes. He’s up to a couple under par.
Nick Dunlap's dire day

Harry Latham-Coyle
Nick Dunlap won’t be off until a little later, but the youngster endured a day to forget yesterday with a score of 90 leaving him 11 shots back in last place. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Dunlap, who didn’t even have a shocker with the stick, averaging fewer than two putts per green.
Dunlap looked a potential star of the future when he became the first amateur since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win a PGA Tour event at the American Express last year, but the University of Alabama product has since struggled, and is yet to make a cut at a major. That won’t be changing this weekend - we’ve all been there, Nick.

Rose aside, none of those at the top of the leaderboard are out and about yet, with Daniel Berger the only other man under par on course. Debutant Brian Campbell did briefly pop his head into the red numbers, but a dropped shot at the fourth has knocked him back down to evens.

Justin Rose is back to eight-under. A lovely shot out of the front left bunker having come up just shy with his second leaves him a 14-footer for birdie - in it goes as he extends his advantage at the top of the leaderboard.

Here’s a reminder of who will be teeing off shortly. It’s a fun hour or so ahead on the 1st tee.

1458: Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, Akshay Bhatia

Roses’s second shot at the 1st is just off the right edge of the green, in the fringe but he chips to within a couple of feet and taps in for a solid par to begin his second round. Now he can attack the par-five 2nd and maybe climb to -8.
Bubba Watson and Brian Campbell are the other men out on the course who were under par early on today but both have now dropped shots to return to evens.

The first is playing at 445 yards today, the pin towards the back of the green. And that’s a lovely start by our leader, hugging the right side of the fairway and steering clear of that pesky bunker to leave himself 170 to the flag. Justin Rose is up and away.
Justin Rose about to tee off...

Harry Latham-Coyle
Righty ho - it’s Justin Rose time. Our overnight leader has made his way to the first tee alongside playing partners Max Homa and JJ Spaun looking to build on another fine first day.
Homa, who really is having a wretched year and parted ways with his caddie ahead of this tournament, was up and down yesterday but salvaged a 74; Spaun matched his fellow American. Can they stay in Rose’s slipstream to ensure a made cut?

How's the weather looking?

,
Harry Latham-Coyle
There was a bit of concern about the Friday forecast earlier in the week, though the latest suggestions are that it may be a dry day after all. A couple of storms overnight will have softened the surfaces, and while there may be a little bit of wind to worry about later, there shouldn’t be too much to cause the field to fret.
Can Justin Rose build on latest fast start?

Justin Rose’s first-round record at Augusta is remarkable. This is the fifth time that he has led the Masters on Thursday night in 20 appearances at the major - is this the year he converts? He’s underway in about half-an-hour.

Laurie Canter underway

Harry Latham-Coyle
Englishman Laurie Canter’s first experience of Augusta rather summed the course up, with the Masters debutant starting really well and appearing set to go under par, only to be stung by four dropped shots around the turn and another couple of bogeys at 17 and 18. A five-over 77 leaves him with work to do today - the former LIV golfer, who has forced his way on to the PGA Tour on the back of good form, is another of the day’s early starters.

It’s not even 7am yet at Augusta but the first players in round two are underway. The trio of Cam Davis (+2), Rafael Campos (+3) and Austin Eckroat (+4) have teed off for their Friday round.
I’d suggest all three would be happy enough just to make the cut today.

Why does TV coverage of the Masters start so late?
12:32
,
Luke Baker
Golf fans hoping to tune in to the Masters will again have to wait for full television coverage to begin as organisers stick with their traditional broadcasting model.
Established in 1934, the first men’s major of the year is held at Augusta in Georgia, with about 90 of the world’s best golfers battling to pull on the famous green jacket.
Sky Sports continues to be the exclusive live broadcast partner of the event in the United Kingdom, but while the first golfers will tee off at 12.40pm BST in the opening two rounds, it is not until 7.30pm that viewers will be able to watch every group live. In fact, that is after the final group of the day have teed off at 6.45pm BST.

Jack Nicklaus makes bold Tiger Woods prediction and takes dig at Phil Mickelson

Jack Nicklaus has predicted that Tiger Woods will “dominate” the Senior Tour if the 15-time major champion chooses to play when eligible.
Woods turns 50 later this year and will become eligible for the series now known as the PGA Tour Champions. His playing future is uncertain after a torn achilles ended his spring, with the 49-year-old missing the Masters at Augusta.
Woods has played sparingly in recent years while battling significant injury issues, though remains eligible for many top events on the PGA Tour.

Jose Luis Ballester admitted to urinating into Rae’s Creek during the opening round of the Masters at Augusta.
The Spanish amateur, who played alongside world No 1 Scottie Scheffler on Thursday, took a break as he played the 13th hole, with some spectators noticing what he was doing as he turned his back to the grandstand and relieved himself into the stream after forgetting that there were toilets available on the course.
The 21-year-old is the US Amateur champion and is playing at the Masters for the first time, where he carded an opening round of four-over-par. After his round, he admitted that he urinated into Rae’s Creek to reporters, but said he would “do it again” if he had to.

Rory McIlroy falls away at Masters
10:06
,
Luke Baker
Rory McIlroy was bogey-free and -4 as he crossed Rae’s Creek on the 15th, looking to nudge his chip close to the pin and set up a birdie chance in his pursuit of Justin Rose.
What followed was extraordinary. McIlroy was faced with a tough chip up the hill on 15th and down the slope towards the hole, and it trickled into the water.
But his double-bogey was followed by another at the 17th, leaving McIlroy seven shots off the pace after being within touching distance of the leader.
There’s still plenty of time, but it’s extraordinary that Ludvig Aberg (-4 on the back nine) ended up with the best score in McIlroy’s group. Even Akshay Bhatia (-2) finished with a lower score than McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy will have to shake-off a poor finish to his opening round of the Masters as he looks to chase Justin Rose and Scottie Scheffler at Augusta National.
McIlroy was bogey-free and four-under-par heading into the 15th hole on Thursday, but made a costly double-bogey seven and then dropped further shots at the 17th to finish at even-par.
McIlroy had been in a share of second place with defending champion Scheffler, who made an ominous start, while Rose shot to the top of the leaderboard with an excellent opening round of seven-under.
After thunderstorms to start the week, the weather has brightened up in Augusta, though there is a chance of a few showers on Friday afternoon - here are the tee times for the second round and the race to make the cut:

Justin Rose leads as Rory McIlroy suffers nightmare finish at Masters
09:48
,
Luke Baker
Two-time runner-up Justin Rose equalled his lowest round at Augusta National as Rory McIlroy suffered a nightmare finish on day one of the 89th Masters.
McIlroy ran up double bogeys on the 15th and 17th as he stumbled to a potentially ruinous 72 in his 11th attempt to claim a green jacket and complete the career grand slam.
In stark contrast, Rose had the course record of 63 in his sights after picking up his eighth birdie of the day on the 16th, but had to scramble for par on the next and bogeyed the last to card an opening seven-under-par 65.
