Surprise! The hottest flavor in snacks right now is the one nobody can name.
From mystery cookies to secret candy flavors, brands are turning snack time into a guessing game, using cash prizes and social media challenges to get customers curious about what's inside.
Chips Ahoy!, SunnyD and Hi-Chew are among the brands jumping on the trend, challenging shoppers to guess limited-edition flavors before the secrets are revealed.
The strategy adds a little adventure to familiar treats, giving shoppers a reason to try something new. It also allow brands a chance to build buzz around products consumers already know, according to Food Dive.
“Consumers love having new flavors to try, but the added ‘guess the flavor’ element makes it even more engaging," Ali Brown, vice president of marketing for sweet baked snacks at J.M. Smucker, told the outlet. "It gives them a fun way to interact with a brand they love and feel like they're part of the experience.”
Chips Ahoy! is putting money on the line, offering fans a chance to win $25,000 by correctly guessing its first-ever mystery cookie flavor. The Mondelēz International-owned brand launched the cookies on TikTok Shop before rolling them out nationwide, with the secret flavor set to be revealed on Halloween.
The cookies feature mystery-themed packaging with caution-tape graphics, encouraging fans to taste, debate and swap guesses.
“Our first-ever Mystery Cookie put the product at the center of the experience, introducing an unidentified flavor that encourages fans to taste, debate and decode the mystery together,” Mili Laddha, senior director of marketing at Mondelēz International, said about the product, per Food Dive.

The guessing game also gives the brand a reason to show up in consumers' social media feeds. Laddha said social media influences which snacks 30 percent of U.S. adults ages 18 to 44 try, making shareable products a useful way for brands to reach new customers.
Chips Ahoy! isn't the only brand betting on the thrill of the unknown. Other snack makers are bringing back mystery flavors after earlier releases drew strong consumer interest.
J.M. Smucker, the company behind Twinkies, introduced a mystery-flavored version of the sponge cake snack at Walmart in 2024 and plans to bring the concept back in 2027.
Hi-Chew is also keeping fans guessing. After its 2025 Halloween mystery flavor proved popular, the candy brand introduced a mystery mix for Easter 2026 and is releasing another Halloween mix this fall.

Joanne Hsu, senior brand marketing manager at Morinaga America, said limited-time releases encourage customers to join the fun before seasonal treats disappear.
A mystery flavor can create "anticipation and a sense of needing to try the product and join the conversation before the supply runs out for the season so they don't miss out on the fun," Hsu told Food Dive.
The response to Hi-Chew's 2025 mystery flavor was "phenomenal,” Hsu added, noting that "strong consumer enthusiasm inspired us to bring the seasonal product back for 2026."
