America’s Billy Horschel leads The Open heading into Sunday’s final round after carding 69 in horrible conditions at Royal Troon.
English major debutant Daniel Brown had the lead heading up the 18th but a double bogey after finding a greenside bunker saw him slip back to three under alongside Thriston Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele.
Scottie Scheffler is one further back on two under, while Shane Lowry – who led after two rounds – had a day to forget, carding 77 to slip from leading on eight under at one stage on Saturday to finish on one under.

Major debutant Dan Brown will play with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler on Sunday at The Open as they try to chase down the overnight leader, Billy Horschel, at Royal Troon.
Horschel finished a wet and wild third round on four under par to take the outright lead after Brown double bogeyed the 18th, which dropped the Yorkshireman back alongside Thriston Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele on three under par.
Scottie Scheffler is eighth on the leaderboard on two under, while Shane Lowry – who at one stage on Saturday led The Open on eight under – had a day to forget, carding 77 to finish on one under. Justin Thomas, Adam Scott and Matthew Jordan are on level par heading into Sunday’s play.
Lawrence and Horschel will be last to tee off, at 2.25pm.

Early starters make hay as wind drops on day three of Open

Birdies were the order of the day in benign conditions on the third day of The Open as the chasing pack sought to take advantage early on.
With winds dropping from Friday’s 25mph gusts to a more gentle steady breeze, Royal Troon’s front nine was at its most vulnerable and offered plenty of opportunities.
South Korea’s Sungjae Im seized the chance with five birdies to turn in 31, the lowest score of the week on the front nine but dropped a shot at the 14th to sit two over.
Daniel Brown in contention on stunning Open debut

Qualifier Dan Brown wrote another chapter in his incredible Open Championship story to set up a thriller of a final day at Royal Troon.
Brown, who birdied the 36th hole in qualifying to secure his major debut, defied miserable conditions to leave himself 18 holes away from a fairytale triumph.
The world number 272 held the outright lead until an unfortunate double bogey on the 18th, but a third round of 73 left him just a shot behind American Billy Horschel.
Horschel, who famously followed a 67 with an 85 in similar weather the last time Troon staged the Open in 2016, only put his rain jacket on between shots as he scrambled his way to an astounding 69 to finish four under par.
That gave the 37-year-old a slender lead over six players, with Brown joined on three under by compatriot Justin Rose, US PGA champion Xander Schauffele and a trio of players who had exploited ideal early conditions.

So close! Brown gives it a good go but his putt dies and breaks just before the hole. A double bogey finish is harsh, but he will still be in a great position going into Sunday and perhaps being off the top of the leaderboard will reduce the pressure overnight. He cards a two-over-par 73 to end on three under.
Lowry’s 77 sees him finish the day ninth on the leaderboard, on one under.

So just two player are left out on the course. Daniel Brown can only hack a little way up the fairway from the very edge of a bunker, with a nasty stance. It’s a sensible play but he still misses the green with his next, and finds a greenside bunker. It’s not a bad lie and he needs a smart up and down for a bogey.
Lowry, meanwhile, is in the grandstand after two shots. He’s going to take relief and get a chip from just in front of the stand, so it’s not worked out too badly.

Lawrence’s second shot on the 12th is promising, but it lands a distance from the pin. A similar distance to the one he drained on the last hole...not this time though, and he stays four-under through 12.
Rahm is safely on the green in regulation on the fourth, but he falls short with the birdie putt and will take par once more.
Thomas is struggling a little and he’ll do well to save par – and avoid three straight bogeys – as he finds the rough with his second shot on 16.
Two more men on +1, Koepka and playing partner Johnson, miss birdie attempts on the second and stay at +1.
On the first, Schauffele and Cantlay make par. Coming up behind them are Jason Day and Corey Conners, teeing off now.

Lawrence makes the green in regulation on the 11th, but it would need to be a great putt for the birdie – and that’s exactly what it is! He moves to -4, and seven-under for the day.
Rahm recovers from his dropped shot to birdie the next hole, and he’s instantly back up to one-over.
Thomas has found the sand trap on 15 but he chips it back onto the green, but he can’t make par. He settles for the bogey and moves to level par.
The rain is starting to fall a bit at Royal Troon as Cantlay and Schauffele tee off. The former just about avoids the first cut on the fairway, while Schauffele’s first effort is more central.

Rahm has the short attempt for par but he’s misjudged it, and he goes to +2.
On the par-three 14, Thomas avoids overrunning the green from the tee and gives himself a slim birdie chance. It’s a great effort, but he can only roll it to within a foot.
Kim can’t capitalise on his hole-in-one and he ends the day on +5 , while Morikawa takes par on the other end of the course at the first.
Brooks Koepka is the latest to take to the tee, and his first shot of the day goes left to right before settling on the fairway. He’s followed by Dustin Johnson, who does similar without as much distance.

Rahm’s second shot on two gets to the green, but he’s struggling for a birdie there.
On 13, Thomas runs a birdie putt attempt past the pin, and he can’t save par either with the follow-up, so he’ll move down to -1.
Colin Morikawa is making his way up the first hole as he looks to jump to level par quickly, but after his second shot is doesn’t look like he’ll make it at first ask.
On 10, Lawrence lands his second shot where the green ends, and it’s looking like he’ll have to settle for a par to go with all those birdies.

Thriston Lawrence is playing sublime golf at the moment but Justin Thomas is looking almost as good. The two-time PGA champ has now got six birdies and no bogeys for his round as he holes a 25-footer from downtown on the 12th! Six-under for his round and now at -2 for the championship, into the top five.
There are scores to be made out on the course at the moment...

And we have a HOLE IN ONE AT THE OPEN! Si Woo Kim comes up trumps with an ace at the 17th! It’s a 238-yard par three, so not exactly a prime candidate for a hole in one but...
Unbelievable shot by Kim, who pitches the ball off the front of the green, it bounces on and rolls into the cup as if guided by a laser. What a shot!

Wow! Thriston Lawrence is playing as good golf as it’s possible to play right now. He makes his SIXTH birdie in the first eight holes thanks to a 130-yard flick from the 8th tee, leaving him four feet for birdie and he rolls it in. Superb stuff from the South African who is now alone in fourth place at -3. If he keeps it together on the back nine, this could be a special round and an interesting clubhouse target.
Adam Scott finishes off his round and is the current clubhouse leader at evens for the championship. A five-under round of 65 does the business.

Where Thomas errs, Thriston Lawrence converts to climb into the top five for the championship at -2! He’s over the back of the green in two at the par-five 6th hole but a deft chip to three feet gives him a tap-in birdie.
The South African is up into a tie for fourth. Absolutely flying.

Justin Thomas’s (-1) 15 birdies are the most in the field this week but he just misses a 16th on the 10th. Gives himself a good look from 20 feet or so and shaves the right edge of the hole. Very, very close to climbing into the top five at -2.

We have our second player of the day into the red! South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence has absolutely hared out of the traps with four birdies in his first five holes, including flighting a gorgeous tee shot to seven feet on the 212-yard, par-three 5th and tapping in the bird.
That has launched him from +3 to -1 for the tournament, where he has joined Justin Thomas, who has saved par with a gutsy 10-footer at the 9th to complete a five-under-par front 9 of 31.
Meanwhile, back on the 1st, Padraig Harrington and Eric Cole can celebrate together as both open with unlikely birdies to immediately climb to +2. Cole holed his from off the front edge of the green, as the putt swung side to side before finding the heart of the hole and Harrington then nailed a putt on a line from 30 feet into the cup. Grins from both men.

The early in-form player of the day, Im, is also on 18 now, and he has a 40-foot birdie attempt to end the day…and he lasers it in! He finishes on +1, having shot an impressive 66 today.
Playing partner Sharma also birdies – albeit from a little closer – and he ends the day on +2, having shot 67.
At nine, Harman is composed to put away the putt for par and close off the front nine with 36.
At the other end of the course, Jordan Spieth has teed off for the day and he makes par on the first.
Hojgaard and Noren, who were both among the early leaders at one point, have also teed off.
Thomas has made that birdie on seven for two in a row and level par, but can he make it three on the par-three eighth? He can! He’s the first p[layer of the day to move into the red as he drains the third birdie in a row for -1.

Justin Thomas digs himself out of the rough on six and he’s got a brilliant opportunity to gain a shot. Calm and composed as he drains it for +1. Playing partner Manassero has the birdie chance too, but he can’t sink it and he stays on +2.
At the seventh, Thomas does well once more and with his approach he lands within a few feet of the pin. A great chance to move to level par.
MacIntyre looks like he’ll struggle to save par after a shaky start to 15, and he doesn’t manage it. He falls to +6.
On 18, Homa’s had an unlucky end to the day as he plugs into the bunker and then lands back in it when attempting to chip out. His fourth shot gets him to within a couple of feet of the pin, and he ends the round on +5, having shot 70.

On 17, Homa attempts the monster putt from deep for par, but it falls short and he’ll bogey for +4.
At 13, MacIntyre found the green in regulation and set himself up with a great birdie chance, but he misjudged it and settled for par. His tee shot on the par-three 14th narrowly avoids rolling off the back of the green, but he’ll have to settle for par once more it looks like.
John Catlin is another who’s creeped up the leaderboard, and he sits on level par as he tees off on the Postage Stamp. He finds the bunker but clips out brilliantly to surely secure par. He’ll stay on four-under for the day.
On 16, Im can’t get enough movement on the birdie putt, so he stays on +2.
One of the surprises of the day so far is the performance of amateur Jacob Skov Olsen, who has risen to +3 and is now 32 holes bogey-free.

A great chip out of the bunker gives Thomas a birdie chance on five, and he drains it with no problem to move to +2.
On 12, MacIntyre is lying in the rough as he takes his approach shot – and he clips it straight into the greenside bunker. Work to do to save par, but a nice chip out gives him the chance at the up and down, and he takes it. Still three-over.
Matteo Manassero has only completed four holes so far today but he’s three-under for the day, and he’s come out of nowhere to threaten a break into the red.
After back-to-back bogeys Harman, who’s on +5 as it stands, is inches away from sinking the eagle putt on six, but he’s dragged it wide. He makes the birdie though, moving to +4.
On 15, Sharma has double bogeyed so he falls back to +4.

MacIntyre’s second shot on 11 gets him out of the rough but he’s overcooked it, and it runs past the green. He’ll need the up and down to save par here – but he can’t get it, and that’s back-to-back bogeys for +5.
Im gets out of the sand on 14, and Sharma goes short with his birdie putt. The South Korean can’t sink the putt for par and he’ll move level with his playing partner on +2.
Thomas makes par once more on three, and his tee shot on fair makes the fairway.
Moving up the course to 10, and Adam Scott narrowly misses another birdie chance, so he stays on +1. Will he be there first to break onto level par today?
At 15, Homa has a birdie chance to get himself to +2, but he’s just dragged it wide.
