After a poor opening round, Charley Hull is back in contention at the HSBC Women’s World Championship.
Hull shot a 72 on Thursday in Singapore, but a second-round 67 brought her to five-under par on the tournament, just four shots behind the leading Auston Kim.
The Englishwoman looked completely out of sorts in her opening round, recording two bogeys on the back nine to finish the day even par. So her sudden resurgence on Friday was somewhat of a surprise.
But Hull’s explanation after her second round made her five-under par performance look miraculous.

Charley Hull’s health issues mean she ‘shouldn’t have come’ to play in Singapore
Hull arrived in Singapore on Tuesday, arriving late for the tournament. That explains her slow start. But after her second round, Hull revealed that “health issues” were the reason for her delay.
She said, “ I haven’t felt like a hundred percent this week. I was meant to fly out on I think it was Saturday night and I couldn’t fly because I was ill. So I flew out on Monday. Monday, so Tuesday so a quick turnaround. The heat gets to you but it’s good.”
She continued, “I just had some health issues but I’m feeling a lot better now.”
It’s impressive that she is in contention at all given the circumstances, and Hull admitted that she really shouldn’t be playing at all: “I shouldn’t have come here, but I really wanted to play because I would have had four or five weeks off. So I wanted to just come out and play anyway.”
If her Friday form was anything to go by, then Hull is recovering nicely and in a position to kick on and win the tournament, despite early struggles.
