There is only one ring that matters in The Association, and it isn't hidden somewhere in Middle-earth. It's the championship ring every NBA player covets, and right now the man who has spent more than two decades chasing them has the entire league waiting for his next move.
LeBron James has yet to reveal where he intends to play next season, and the longer the suspense drags on, the more it feels like everyone else is merely waiting for LeKing to choose his kingdom.
Me thinks LeBron already knows where he wants to go. If he doesn't, then he's certainly enjoying every minute of the speculation. Either way, the rest of free agency remains in a holding pattern because every contender wants to know whether it still has a chance to land one of the greatest players ever to lace them up.
Unlike previous offseasons, however, teams have largely spent their salary-cap space. Whoever signs LeBron will probably do so for something close to the veteran minimum. Imagine that. A player who has rewritten record books could become the biggest bargain in basketball, and every ounce of accompanying drama would still be worth tolerating.
For the record, I still rank Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the greatest player of all time, followed by Michael Jordan, with LeBargain comfortably occupying the third spot. That is hardly a slight considering the company he keeps.
So where does The King go?
The obvious sentimental choice is Cleveland.
The title of this column is no accident. Just as Aragorn reclaimed Gondor, another return to the Cavaliers would complete LeBron's basketball journey where it first began after he was selected No. 1 overall in the legendary 2003 NBA Draft. It would make for a fitting final chapter even if another championship doesn't necessarily follow.
The basketball fit, though, is another matter. Donovan Mitchell is now Cleveland's franchise cornerstone, and there are only so many possessions to share when multiple stars need the ball in their hands.
Golden State also remains fascinating. Pairing LeBron with Stephen Curry would instantly create must-see television, while Draymond Green would surely welcome his longtime friend. Reports continue to swirl that LeBron would love another reunion with Anthony Davis, although that seems far easier said than done following Davis' departure from the Los Angeles Lakers.
I digress.
Philadelphia deserves mention as well. Tyrese Maxey reportedly has been recruiting LeBron, while the 76ers have assembled an intriguing supporting cast. The biggest question remains Joel Embiid's health because every championship dream in Philadelphia ultimately depends on whether the big man can stay on the court when it matters most.
The Western Conference, meanwhile, remains a gauntlet featuring Oklahoma City, Denver, Minnesota, San Antonio, and several other legitimate contenders. Simply reaching the NBA Finals through that conference will be considerably tougher than navigating the East.
That is why Miami continues to intrigue me.
One NBA analyst recently made an excellent point. If LeBron returns to Cleveland, it becomes his team again. But if he heads back to South Beach, everyone understands the franchise still belongs to Pat Riley. Erik Spoelstra remains the coach, Heat Culture remains the identity, and LeBron simply becomes another superstar buying into an established system.
Even without him, Miami should not be overlooked.
Our kababayans know better than most never to count out Spoelstra, whose teams have repeatedly exceeded expectations. Add Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Donovan Mitchell, Nikola Jovic, Pelle Larsson, Ryan Conwell, and hometown addition Tim Hardaway Jr., and the Heat suddenly possess one of the league's deepest rotations.
Even if LeDrama never returns to South Beach, Miami still looks like a legitimate dark horse to capture the Larry O'Brien Trophy. Adding him would simply transform a dangerous contender into a genuine favorite.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver is undoubtedly hoping a decision comes soon because LeBron's choice will trigger the rest of free agency. Teams that miss out will immediately pivot to the remaining veterans, while the league can finally complete the puzzle for next season.
Whether it becomes a third stint in Cleveland, another chapter in Miami, or an unexpected destination, LeBron's decision will reshape the championship landscape.
The King has reached the final stages of a remarkable career.
Now the basketball world simply waits for his return.
