Winged Foot is said to be the course that hands Scottie Scheffler the best chance to complete the Career Grand Slam in the coming years.

Scheffler missed the opportunity to join one of golf’s most exclusive clubs at the first time of asking this past week. Of course, the US Open is the only major the world number one is yet to win during his career.

He had an outside chance of victory heading into the final round at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday. Scheffler joined Wyndham Clark in the last group. Admittedly, the 30-year-old was six shots adrift of the leader.

It proved to be a round that summed up Scottie Scheffler‘s season. There was something missing from his round, with the four-time major champion simply unable to put any real pressure on Clark.

Ultimately, it was Scheffler’s good friend Sam Burns who made the strongest charge in Southampton. Scheffler will now have to wait another year for his next opportunity.

But speaking on the Golf Channel Podcast, Ryan Lavner admitted that he can see Scheffler needing even longer.

“If you’re looking at the next five venues for the US Open, Pebble Beach next year, followed by Winged Foot, Pinehurst, Merion, and Riviera. Pebble Beach, obviously, he plays at each and every year on the PGA Tour. It’s a signature event, has not won there yet. Another golf course that has poa greens that can be very difficult to putt on,” he said.

“I’m circling Winged Foot as an opportunity for him to do it. Pinehurst, for whatever reason, perhaps the preparation of having just played, I think it was the Memorial the week before in 2024, he’s going to have a different preparation that time. But again, Donald Ross greens a little bit tricky as well.

“So I think Winged Foot is a possibility and a good possibility for Scottie Scheffler to knock off the final leg of the slam in 2028.”

Scottie Scheffler is an unknown quantity around Winged Foot

Interestingly, the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot was the last time Scheffler was not in the field for golf’s toughest test. He had played three times in the previous four stagings before that.

His US Open record since Bryson DeChambeau’s victory in New York is absolutely superb. Scheffler has finished outside the top seven on just one occasion, at Pinehurst in 2024.

He finished tied for second at Brookline in 2022, and third at LACC the following year.

Scheffler has not quite had the 2026 season that he would have hoped for. However, we are still a long, long way off the stage where he is not the favourite going into any tournament he plays.

So it should come as no surprise if he does manage to make 2027 the year he secures golfing immortality.
