The United States men’s national team made a record-setting start to their 2026 World Cup opener against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium.
A host nation’s first game always carries extra pressure, especially when the crowd is waiting for an early sign that the occasion will not swallow the team.
The USA found that release almost immediately, and the speed of the breakthrough placed the moment alongside two famous World Cup starts.

USMNT storms into World Cup record company after Paraguay own goal
In a post shared by OptaJack on X, the early USA breakthrough was placed behind only France in 1938 and Germany in 2006 among host nations starting a World Cup campaign.
“The USMNT’s 7th minute goal is the third-fastest scored by a host nation in their opening match at a FIFA World Cup after France in 1938 (1′) and Germany in 2006 (6′). Storming,” the X handle revealed.
The goal came after Weston McKennie delivered a dangerous ball into the Paraguay box, with Damian Bobadilla turning it into his own net under early American pressure.
That made the record slightly unusual, because it was not finished by a USA player, but it still counted as the breakthrough that gave the hosts their rapid opening-game lead.
USMNT turns Paraguay opener into statement before game is even over
The early goal became the platform for a first-half performance that quickly moved beyond nerves and ceremony. Folarin Balogun added to the lead in the 31st minute, then struck again in first-half stoppage time to put the USA 3-0 up.
At the time of writing, the game is still going on, but the hosts have already turned their opener into a commanding statement. The record also carries a clear historical echo.
France’s first-minute goal in 1938 remains the fastest by a host nation in its opening match, while Philipp Lahm’s sixth-minute strike for Germany against Costa Rica in 2006 had stood as the modern benchmark for two decades.
The USA’s seventh-minute opener did not overtake either, but it ended a 20-year gap since a host nation had started a World Cup campaign that quickly. For a team carrying home expectations, that was the kind of start that changed the mood of the night almost instantly.
