Donald Trump could face an unusual consequence from a growing dispute between the United States government and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
A proposal under consideration by WADA could prevent certain government officials from attending major sporting events.
If adopted, the move could affect appearances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

WADA rule proposal could affect Donald Trump’s attendance at the World Cup and Olympics
According to a report from the Associated Press, the World Anti-Doping Agency is discussing a rule change that could target governments failing to pay their membership dues.
“According to a draft of the proposal, the rule would apply to governments that have not paid dues by Jan. 31 of the year after they’re billed.
“The U.S. hasn’t paid its WADA dues since 2023. There was no mention of “retroactivity” or lack thereof in the document the executives are considering,” AP reported.
The proposal comes after a long-running dispute between the United States and WADA over several issues, including how the agency handled cases involving Chinese swimmers.
The U.S. government has withheld annual payments to WADA since 2023 as part of that protest, creating tension between American officials and the global anti-doping body.
Why WADA sanctions could target Trump and other US officials
The potential sanctions being discussed would directly affect government officials from countries that remain out of compliance with WADA’s financial requirements.
“Among the most extreme sanctions include ‘government representatives being excluded from participation in major events such as World Championships and Olympic & Paralympic Games,'” the report continued.
It concluded: “That would include Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and members of Congress, who recently approved hundreds of millions in funding for security and other logistics for the World Cup and LA Games.”
If implemented, the rule could prevent senior U.S. government figures from attending global sporting events hosted in the country.
With the United States preparing to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, the dispute has the potential to create an unusual diplomatic and sporting conflict.
