The white shirt approach to skincare

With skincare routines continuously evolving, some brands are placing greater emphasis on skin barrier health, arguing that a strong foundation may help other products perform more effectively.

Local skincare brand Habitude has built its philosophy around a concept familiar in fashion: the white shirt. Like a wardrobe staple that remains useful regardless of changing trends, the brand positions barrier-focused skincare as an everyday essential that supports the rest of a routine.

“We always say Habitude plays well with others. It’s skincare built for rotation — not to replace everything on your shelf, but to make all of it work better. Just like the white shirt you rely on, season after season,” said co-founder Noelle Hui.

According to the brand, a healthy skin barrier helps maintain resilience and supports the skin’s ability to absorb and respond to other products. Concerns such as persistent redness, increased sensitivity and changes in how skincare products perform can sometimes be linked to barrier issues.

That philosophy is reflected in Habitude’s three-product lineup, which the company describes as a simplified routine centered on skin barrier care.

The Thicc Water Toner is designed as a pH-balancing toner for oily and sensitive skin. Formulated with VB9+, pomegranate and centella asiatica, it is intended to help calm the skin, regulate sebum production and prepare it for subsequent products.

The Dew It All Essence combines galactomyces ferment filtrate with a botanical complex aimed at hydrating the skin while supporting balance in the skin microbiome.

Meanwhile, the Skin On Holiday Serum features niacinamide and EGF oligopeptides, ingredients the brand said are intended to support the skin barrier, improve skin tone and address the appearance of fine lines.

Each product can be used individually, though the company describes the range as a simplified routine centered on barrier care.

For co-founder Nikki Rivera, the concept extends beyond formulation.

“We think about skin the way we think about the things that hold us together — the barrier that knows what to let in and what to keep out, the habit you reach for without second-guessing. That’s what Habitude is trying to be — Filipino skincare that becomes a habit because it first became a trust,” Rivera said.

The founders also said the brand’s principles influence decisions related to sourcing, packaging and product development.

“What we build builds us,” co-founder Romina Nañagas said. “So we strive to do it right at every step — science-led and barrier-first in our development; local excellence and globally forward-thinking ingredients in our sourcing; artist-led, recyclable and considered in our packaging; and honest — including about the unglorious aspects — in our approach.”

Founded in 2021, Habitude was relaunched in 2025 with a reformulated product lineup. The company describes itself as a Filipino skincare and lifestyle brand focused on barrier-first products and collaborations with local artists for its packaging.
