For today's couples, a wedding is about far more than the ceremony itself. Increasingly, they're choosing destinations that promise unforgettable experiences and memories to last a lifetime.

Deciding where to get married has become one of the biggest decisions for engaged couples. More than simply choosing a venue, the destination sets the tone for the entire celebration – whether that's a castle in the countryside, a seaside reception, a luxury hotel or an overseas location that turns the big day into an unforgettable getaway. As more couples dream of celebrating their wedding alongside family and friends in a holiday-style setting, choosing the perfect destination has never been more important.

Which are the best countries to get married?

To better understand the preferences of engaged couples, leading hotel group Hyatt has released its Vows & Venues report, which explores the latest wedding trends for 2026. Conducted by market research agency Walr between 14 and 16 April 2026, the survey gathered responses from 2,000 people across France and reveals the destinations that French people dream of for their wedding day.

The standout finding? Although destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular, the French remain deeply attached to their own country. France tops the rankings by a considerable margin with 79% of the vote, followed by Italy, Spain, Mauritius and the Maldives.

France remains a favourite wedding destination

With its diverse landscapes, rich history and world-renowned art de vivre, France continues to be the country's favourite place to tie the knot. From vineyards and centuries-old châteaux to country houses and luxury hotels, there's no shortage of spectacular settings for a bespoke celebration.

According to Hyatt's research, historic estates and country houses remain the dream wedding venues for 25% of respondents, ahead of luxury restaurants (22%) and boutique hotels (18%). Five-star hotels are proving especially popular with younger generations, with 31% of 18 to 24-year-olds and 25% of those aged 25 to 34 naming them as their ideal venue.

The study also suggests that French couples are embracing longer, more immersive celebrations. The ideal wedding now lasts two days, with 56% of respondents saying a post-wedding brunch is an essential part of the festivities. It's part of the growing trend for the 'wed-cation', where the wedding becomes a shared holiday experience with family and friends.

Italy: the ultimate romantic escape

While France comfortably claims first place, Italy ranks second with 15% of the vote. The country continues to enchant couples with its breathtaking scenery, historic towns and unmistakably romantic atmosphere.

Whether it's Venice's grand palaces, the rolling hills of Tuscany or the Mediterranean coastline, Italy offers the quintessential picture-postcard wedding. It's a destination where couples can combine a memorable ceremony with exceptional food, culture and sightseeing.

The Maldives: a barefoot wedding in paradise

Completing the top five with 7% of the vote, the Maldives remains one of the world's most coveted wedding destinations. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, private villas and intimate atmosphere, the archipelago offers the perfect tropical setting, often followed by an equally idyllic honeymoon.
