Taking to Threads, user @nblmr19 explained that they were only passing through the area by chance and had to rush off to other pressing matters shortly after assisting the children.
A heart-wrenching conversation
While handing out food, the user struck up a conversation with the young kids to understand their situation, asking where their parents were, why they were wandering around looking unkempt, and whether they had eaten.
The original poster shared the distressing details of the interaction online:
“Just wanted to share, I asked the kids if they had eaten yet, and they said they hadn’t eaten for 3 days… I asked what they were doing here, and they said their mother dropped them off to work. When I asked what kind of work, they said they collect tins and bottles to sell so they can get money to help mom.”
From the conversation, the children revealed that their father was unemployed, chronically ill, and needed medication just to function. The user also gathered that the father’s severe health issues were linked to long-term substance abuse or addiction.
The children also claimed that their mother was involved in tembak ikan (fish shooting), which refers to online gambling.
Moved by the resilience of the young siblings, @nblmr19 highlighted how heartbreaking it is to see children bearing the heavy burden of adult responsibilities. Highlighting their quiet endurance, the user noted that despite everything, the two children managed to keep to themselves, not bothering others or begging for money, yet unfairly forced to carry a weight far beyond their years.

“I uploaded this here not with the intention to shame anyone. For social media users who are still sane, we should use this as a platform for public awareness regarding the issues raised, so that some do not misuse this against those trapped in difficult lives, especially underage children. Not all of us need to be concerned, just giving them food for them to survive is enough.” the user said.
