AweGallery presents Thi Kong a-Kia, an exhibition unveiling the remarkable journey of Lim Chow Nee, an 86-year-old collector from Muar. Rooted in intuition and quiet perseverance, the showcase reflects a lifetime shaped by memory, destiny and a deep curiosity for the past.
“Thi Kong a-Kia,” meaning a God-sent or heaven-blessed child in Hokkien, mirrors Lim’s path. His journey began with a simple discovery — a bucket of old coins left by his late father — which sparked a lifelong fascination with stamps, letters and antiques. Despite leaving school early, he went on to build a significant archive guided by instinct rather than formal training.
Over time, rare pieces seemed to find their way to him, often through chance encounters or the generosity of others. This sense of serendipity defines both his collection and his story.
Among the highlights is The Penny Black, issued in London in 1840 and recognised as the world’s first adhesive postage stamp. The exhibition also features letters from the period surrounding Malaysia’s Independence, offering insight into personal histories and communication of the time.
Visitors are taken through a structured journey of postal history, from stampless letters sealed with wax to early stamp systems, alongside displays of old currency. An interactive corner allows guests to experience traditional stamping techniques.
More than an exhibition, Thi Kong a-Kia is a reflection on heritage, preservation and the unseen forces that shape a life.
