The Bhuna police have arrested the third member of a gang, which had defrauded HDFC Bank by pledging fake gold to obtain loan worth several lakhs.

They have also recovered Rs 30,000 — part of defrauded amount — from the accused who has been identified as Ankit, a resident of Uchana,

Bhuna police station in-charge Sub-Inspector Omprakash Bishnoi said the action followed a complaint by the bank manager.

As per the complaint, in May 2024, the accused had applied for gold loan at the bank, pledging four bangles and one pendant weighing 122.90 grams to secure Rs 5,84,000 loan.

When the bank initiated auction proceedings due to non-repayment of the loan, its panel of jewellers examined the pledged gold and found approximately 75 per cent of it to be fake, coated with 25 per cent real gold.

Following the revelation, the bank immediately filed a police complaint. Investigations revealed that the accused had carefully planned the fraud, secured the loan and failed to make repayment. Two other gang members had already been arrested.

Bishnoi said the police are looking for other possible members of the gang. After questioning, Ankit was released on bail, as per legal procedure.
