PKR Vice President Nurul Izzah Anwar has urged members of the Unity Government to set aside divisive debates around race and religion and instead channel their energy into national development and the people’s welfare.
Speaking at a campaign event in Perak, Nurul Izzah emphasized that the current administration enjoys a rare moment of political stability and must seize the opportunity to govern with inclusivity and purpose. “This government is already stable. We no longer want to quarrel about race or religion. There’s no time for that anymore,” she said, according to Sinar Harian.
She also stressed the need for strong collaboration between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional, especially as Malaysia prepares to chair ASEAN amid rising global uncertainties. “This is the time to show unity and strength within our coalition so that we can safeguard Malaysia,” she added.
Her comments were made during a campaign event for Barisan Nasional’s Ayer Kuning by-election candidate, Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir. The by-election, set for April 26, follows the passing of UMNO assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin in February. Ishsam previously won the seat by a 2,213-vote majority in a five-way contest. This time, the battle will feature three contenders: Yusri (UMNO), Abdul Muhaimin Malek (PAS), and KS Bawani (Parti Sosialis Malaysia), who also contested in GE15.
Nurul Izzah called for unity not just among politicians but also in policy direction, highlighting the importance of addressing the real challenges faced by Malaysians in the post-pandemic era. Reducing poverty, tackling joblessness, and ensuring access to education were among her top priorities.
She pointed to the government’s efforts to expand access to education and training, especially through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which aims to equip Malaysians with the skills needed for a secure future. “Previously, one had to wait for opportunities to pursue a degree. Now, you can start learning right away. Keep learning—this is how we build a better future,” she said.
Nurul Izzah’s message served as a reminder that political stability should translate into real progress for the rakyat, not be squandered on outdated and divisive rhetoric.
