Wild beaches, wind-swept cliffs, whitewashed villages facing the Atlantic… The Alentejo coast reveals a still unspoilt side of Portugal. And at the mouth of the Mira River, Vila Nova de Milfontes offers one of the most beautiful glimpses of this discreet yet radiant region.

In the south-west of Portugal, in the Alentejo region, Vila Nova de Milfontes charms visitors with its peaceful atmosphere and spectacular natural surroundings. Set precisely where the Mira River meets the Atlantic Ocean, the village lies within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, one of the country’s best-preserved natural areas. With its wild beaches, lime-washed streets and endless sea views, this small town is now one of the finest stops for discovering coastal Alentejo.

Vila Nova de Milfontes, a well-kept secret of the Alentejo

Long a simple fishing village, Vila Nova de Milfontes has retained an elegant simplicity that defines its appeal. White houses lined with bougainvillea are arranged around a peaceful square and a seafront promenade overlooking the ocean.

Above the river stands the São Clemente Fort, a small 16th-century fortress built to defend the coast from pirates. From here, the view stretches across the mouth of the Mira and the long expanses of golden sand.

Here, nature still reigns supreme. The village lies at the heart of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, a wild territory protecting cliffs, dunes and spectacular beaches. Among them are some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in Portugal, such as Praia das Furnas — reached by crossing the river by boat — and Praia da Franquia, more sheltered and ideal for swimming in the calm waters of the estuary.

Between river and ocean, a traveller’s paradise

What makes Vila Nova de Milfontes so unique is the constant dialogue between two landscapes: river and ocean. In the morning, the Mira becomes a mirror-like expanse where kayaks and fishing boats glide peacefully. By afternoon, the Atlantic reveals a wilder side, with powerful waves drawing surfers and nature lovers alike.

Hikers can follow the famous Trilho dos Pescadores, a spectacular coastal trail running along the cliffs of the Vicentine Coast. Around every bend, secluded coves, deserted beaches and wind-sculpted rock formations come into view.

As evening falls, life gently returns to the village streets. Terraces fill with diners sampling local specialities: grilled fish, garlic clams or arroz de marisco, a generous seafood rice dish. It is this effortless blend of nature and gastronomy that makes Vila Nova de Milfontes one of the Portuguese’s own favourite destinations.
