Erling Haaland came to the rescue with a late 2-1 winner as Norway won a World Cup knock-out match for the first time, in the round of 32 against Ivory Coast on Tuesday.
Haaland did not hit the ball cleanly in the 86th minute off a great cut back from Patrick Berg but it was enough to to beat goalkeeper Yahia Fofana and cross the line.
It was the Manchester City star's fifth goal of the tournament, one behind leader Lionel Messi of Argentina, and Haaland has now scored in 13 Norway matches in a row and has 60 goals from 53 caps.
The win sent Norway into a last 16 tie with record winners Brazil on Sunday, where Haaland will square off against Vinícius Júnior. Norway famously beat Brazil in the 1998 group stage and have never lost against Brazil in four meetings overall.
Man of the Match Antonio Nusa put Norway 1-0 up in the 39th with a stunning curling shot into the top corner.
Ivory Coast's equalizer in the 74th from substitute Amad Diallo was as classy after a one-two with Nicolas Pepé, after Diallo had minutes earlier cleared on his goal-line.
But Norway had the last laugh to win a knock-out match for the first time on their third attempt, having lost last 16 matches in 1938 and 1998.
Ivory Coast reached the knock-outs for the first time and came very close to another equalizer when a sensational free-kick from Diallo was saved by Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland deep into stoppage time.
History for Norway, learning experience for Ivorians
"This is unbelievable, this is history," Haaland said in a video he made on the pitch and shared by Fox Sports.
Nusa spoke of "a dream come true" and added: "I am very grateful for being here and having helped Norway write history."
Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé said: "That's football. You must take your chances. We got the equalizer. The players gave their all and maybe we were a little unlucky.
"It is about little things. We have learnt a lot. We knew we gave our all. We didn't have the luck today but we will continue working."
Norway take half-time lead
Led by Haaland, Norway coach Ståle Solbakken rotated all the players he had rested in the final group match against France back in.
Haaland had an unmarked header aimed at the far corner blocked in the third minute, and another header from him was too tame to trouble Fofana..
In-between, Ivory Coast had a first chance when Yan Diomande crossed from the left to the far post where Pepé's volley went across goal when he should have better aimed at the target.
Norway got the breakthrough when Nusa had space on the left, beat a defender and superbly curled into the top right corner for 1-0.
Norway pressed for an immediate second with Haaland blocked in the goalmouth by Ibrahim Sangaré after Alexander Sørloth had headed the ball on to him. Sørloth then glanced wide on the ensuing corner kick.
Ivoarians hit back but Haaland has last laugh
Ivory Coast went in search of the equalizer after the break, with the lively Pepé denied from short range by Nyland.
Even Haaland had to help out in his own penalty area and clear twice while Diallo came on in the 60th and soon made an impact at both ends.
He first kept his team in the match when he cleared a shot from point blank range by Torbjørn Heggem on his goal line. In the 74th he scored a superb equalizer, playing a one-two with Pepé and firing into the far corner after running past two defenders.
Ivory Coast pleaded in vain for a penalty when Pepé was clipped by Andreas Schjelderup in the 78th, and the Africans' agony was complete when Haaland bundled home to restore Norway's lead.
And the now traditional and famous rowing routine with the fans could start in earnest after Nyland's final save.
