This K-beauty moisturiser transformed my breakout-prone skin

Korean skincare is known for soothing, calming ingredients that can provide welcome relief when your skin barrier is under stress. Haruharu Wonder’s black rice moisturiser does just that, leaving skin feeling nourished. I’ve spent months putting it to the test.

The K-beauty moisturiser is packed with hydrating ingredients, which should suit most skin types. This includes the brand’s signature ingredient, fermented black rice, which it says should enhance elasticity and give your skin a glow. Allantoin provides moisture, jigemi (aka the byproduct of fermenting black rice) is said to smooth skin texture and tocopherol (aka vitamin E) offers antioxidant protection against environmental stressors like pollution. Combined with five types of ceramides, these ingredients are designed to provide an instant hit of moisture and hydration for skin that feels a bit angry.

I used up a whole tub of Haruharu Wonder’s black rice moisturiser over a few months to see if it could calm the recurring breakouts on my cheeks. Keep reading to find out if it made a difference.

Before using this moisturiser, I was experiencing recurring breakouts on my cheeks and I couldn’t pinpoint why. Instead of adding more potent actives to my skincare routine, I stripped it back to a nourishing cleanser and hydrating serum and swapped my daily moisturiser for Haruharu Wonder’s black rice moisturising cream, using it day and night to see if it could calm my skin.

Haruharu Wonder claims that skin hydration and barrier strength improve in just two weeks of use. Skincare claims like this should be taken with a pinch of salt, but I was pleased to note that after a few weeks, the breakouts on my cheeks had gone and weren’t reappearing. The soothing ingredients really calmed my skin barrier and my skin had that K-beauty glass glow. The moisturiser managed to strike the perfect balance between feeling hydrating, but not too rich and greasy. My skin drank up the skin-quenching ingredients and was thanking me for it.

I’ve used the moisturiser down to the last drop (it lasts a couple of months with daily use) and I honestly can’t find much to fault with it. It comes in a pot, which doesn’t feel the most hygienic, but considering the effect it had on my skin, I’m able to look past this.

  • Why I love it: Soothes irritated skin, packed with hydrating ingredients, lightweight formula doesn’t feel too rich
  • Take note: Tube application would feel a bit more hygienic

Is Haruharu Wonder’s black rice 5 ceramide barrier moisturising cream worth it?

After using up a whole pot of Haruharu Wonder’s black rice moisturiser, I’ll be repurchasing. I was sceptical that a moisturiser without active ingredients would be able to do much for my combination, breakout-prone skin. But it turned out this was exactly what I needed: a nourishing, hydration-focused formula that would calm any irritation.
