Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad gains two key doubles players, while Lee Zii Jia’s participation remains under discussion with BAM.

KUALA LUMPUR: The national men’s doubles pair of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have confirmed their availability for the Thomas Cup campaign.

National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the professional pair have agreed to rejoin the national squad for the tournament in Horsens, Denmark this April.

He added that Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin might remain with the squad through to the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.

“Yes, they have replied… In fact, even until the Asian Games,” Rexy said.

The participation of other professional shuttlers, however, is still pending.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Performance Committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei said a decision on Lee Zii Jia is expected within a week.

He said several matters need finalising between Zii Jia’s camp and BAM before a conclusion is reached.

“We have discussed it, and he asked for a week to think it over. We hope he can join the team,” Chong Wei said.

The meeting also involved professional women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei regarding the Uber Cup.

Chong Wei met with Zii Jia, his coach Liew Darren, and Jin Wei for an hour at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia.

Their discussion centred on selection for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals from April 24 to May 3.
