Teachers in Richland Parish, Louisiana, are set to receive one-time “clean out” checks worth up to $50,935 this year, following an unusually large local sales tax haul. The payments come at the end of the school year and are based on a unique revenue-sharing system tied to sales taxes collected in the parish.

Record Sales Tax Revenue

The Richland Parish area, located about 161 miles north of Baton Rouge, typically distributes around $20 million annually in supplementary sales tax disbursements to educators and local authorities. However, 2026 has brought exceptional revenue, surpassing $43 million, largely due to the construction of a large Meta Data Center within the parish.

The funds are split among local bodies: the Richland Parish School Board receives 53 percent, the Police Jury 35 percent, and the Law Enforcement District 12 percent. The significant increase has translated into unusually high one-time payments for teachers and staff.

How Payments Are Calculated

Distributions are limited to full-time, regular teachers and staff. Payments vary based on years of experience, employment status, and other factors. Certified teachers, those with official teaching certificates, receive the largest amounts. First-year teachers get a quarter of the full share, second-year half, third-year three-quarters, and those with four or more years receive the full check, subject to deductions.

Classified staff, such as custodians, bus drivers, and lunchroom technicians, are also eligible, though their maximum payments are lower. In 2026, the top check for a classified employee is $17,472, explainsThe Sun.

Reductions can apply for leave without pay, garnishments, or employment for less than a full contract year. Even so, these one-time payments are substantial, with some teachers receiving amounts roughly equivalent to a full annual salary. For context, the average certified teacher salary in Louisiana is about $50,285, while top earners approach $62,577.

A Unique Year for Teachers

These “13th checks” or “clean-out” checks are typically issued in June as the school year concludes, supplementing regular salaries. This year’s payouts are historic, representing more than double the typical 2025 payments, which ranged from $10,200 to $3,323.

The windfall comes amid other nationwide settlements offering one-time payments to specific groups. For example, Whole Foods shoppers can claim a portion of a $5 million settlement, and Bank of America customers may be eligible for cash from a $2.25 million settlement.

In Richland Parish, however, the payments reflect local revenue growth rather than national legal action, providing teachers and staff with a significant financial boost and recognition for their service over the past year.
