Police investigations into threats directed at the family of former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli have taken a new turn, with authorities confirming that the phone number used to send a message to his wife was registered under the name of a foreign national.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail explained during a briefing in Bukit Aman that officers are now tracing the individual associated with the number. The development followed a string of incidents that began on August 13, when Rafizi’s 12-year-old son was reportedly assaulted at a shopping mall in Putrajaya.
Since the attack, statements have been taken from 19 individuals, including Rafizi’s family members, the family driver, mall workers, and other witnesses present at the scene. Police have also gathered and reviewed closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings from the premises to establish a clearer picture of the incident.
Attention is now focused on the results of a hospital chemical analysis, which is expected to determine the nature of the substance allegedly injected into Rafizi’s son. For now, the boy is said to be in stable condition, though doctors continue to keep him under close medical observation.
Earlier accounts indicated that the confrontation occurred around 2pm at the mall’s pick-up and drop-off zone. While no visible injuries were initially detected, Rafizi later stated that his son had been attacked by two unidentified men clad in black attire and wearing full-face helmets, who allegedly used a syringe during the assault.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar previously confirmed that physical wounds were not apparent at the time, but authorities nonetheless classified the matter as serious due to the suspected use of chemicals. Investigators are now pursuing several leads to determine both the identity of the assailants and their motive.
As investigations proceed, the case has highlighted growing anxieties over public safety and the protection of high-profile individuals. Authorities have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to uncover those responsible and to ensure accountability for the disturbing chain of events.
