TAWAU: A man in his 30s was arrested for allegedly threatening to harm his mother with a machete after she refused to give him money.

District police chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the incident occurred around 11.10pm on Monday at a house along Jalan Chester.

The suspect was arrested at 2am the next morning at the sidewalk of a building in town, here by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division.

According to Jasmin, the suspect had previously exhibited aggressive behaviour and had caused damage to neighbours’ property.

“He threatened to hit his mother with a machete when she did not give him money, and this is not the first time such behaviour has been reported,” he said.

The police report was lodged by the suspect’s own younger sibling about an hour after the incident. The man is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

Initial checks revealed that he has no prior criminal record. Jasmin urged members of the public not to hesitate in lodging police reports if they experience threats or violence within the family, to ensure swift action can be taken.

In a separate case, a foreign man in his late 20s was also arrested after allegedly going on a rampage at a house in Taman Ria.

The case is being investigated under Sections 506, 323, and 326A of the Penal Code, as well as Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
