LAHAD DATU: Three couples were detained for khalwat (close proximity) during a joint operation by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) on the eve of the National Day and Sabah Day celebration.
The five-hour operation, which began at 9pm, involved Jheains personnel from Lahad Datu, Kota Kinabalu and Tungku, together with the police and Immigration Department.
District Jheains Administration Officer Mardi Ariffin said the team inspected more than 60 rooms across 10 hotels during the operation.
He said three couples were taken in under Section 84 of the Sabah Syariah Criminal Offence Enactment for close proximity and indecent behaviour.
All those detained were later brought to District Police Headquarters for further action.
