The bodies of three men have been recovered from the Rhine river in Germany after they had previously been reported missing near the south-western town of Biblis, police said on Tuesday.
The men aged 23, 27 and 50 were found dead on Monday morning, police said in a statement, adding that there were no signs of third-party interference.
The family of the 50-year-old had reported him as missing on Saturday evening after he had gone swimming in the Rhine near Biblis, some 50 kilometres south of Frankfurt.
When he didn't return after two and a half hours, his relatives alerted the police, who then searched the river by boat and helicopter but were unable to locate the man, according to police.
During the operation, passersby on the river shore alerted them to the 23- and 27-year-old, who had gone underwater near a boat ramp. Neither of them knew how to swim.
Firefighters, lifeguards and other emergency workers called to the scene were unable to locate them.
Due to its strong, underwater currents, swimming in the Rhine river is considered extremely dangerous. Major cities along the river, including Dusseldorf and Cologne, only banned swimming last year following a spate of drownings.
