A 29-YEAR-OLD lorry driver has been remanded for four days following a devastating collision on the Johor Bahru-Seremban Road near Simpang Taman Golden Hill, Gemas Baru, that claimed the lives of three members of a five-member family travelling in a van.
The remand order, issued by Magistrate Amalina Johar, is effective from today until Monday to allow police to complete investigations under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Segamat District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Jumazanzahir Chek Ismail, confirmed that the suspect tested positive for drugs following a urine screening conducted shortly after the accident.
“The suspect was detained yesterday afternoon to assist with investigations and was confirmed positive for Methamphetamine,” he said.
Previously, the probe had been initiated under Section 41(1) of the same act, but it was upgraded to Section 44(1)(a) due to the driver operating the vehicle under the influence of drugs, resulting in fatalities, the superintendent added.
The collision occurred at approximately 4:00 pm yesterday, when the van carrying the family was struck by two lorries while returning home to Taman Golden Hill.
The victims who died at the scene included the van driver, aged in his seventies, and two passengers aged in their twenties and sixties.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. - April 3, 2026
