Three dead and two injured after a trailer crash in Segamat, with the driver testing positive for methamphetamine and detained for investigation.

SEGAMAT: Three people were killed and two others injured in a three-vehicle collision yesterday.

The accident occurred at around 3.45 pm at KM212 of the Johor Bahru-Seremban road near the Taman Golden Hill intersection in Gemas Baharu.

Johor police chief Datuk CP Ab Rahaman Arsad said a trailer driven by a local man crashed into the rear of a van.

The impact caused the van to lose control and enter the opposite lane, where it collided with an oncoming lorry.

Three victims in the van were pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries.

Two other passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Segamat Hospital for treatment.

The drivers of the lorry and the trailer were not injured in the incident.

The trailer driver has been detained to assist in the investigation.

An initial urine test found the man tested positive for methamphetamine.

The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and causing death.

It is also being probed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for consuming drugs.

The driver will be brought to the Segamat Magistrate’s Court for a remand application.

Police urged members of the public with information to come forward.

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department confirmed the accident involved a van, a Volvo trailer, and a 10-tonne lorry.

Operations commander Zainal Abidin Che Deraman said rescue teams worked to free trapped victims.

The operation at the scene was fully concluded at 5.35 pm.
