San Jose, California(dpa) – Three climbers from Latvia have died in an accident on North America's highest peak, Denali.

A fourth member of the seven-person group was taken to hospital in a critical condition, the Latvian Mountaineering Federation said on Friday. The victims were "talented and experienced" mountaineers.

Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, rises almost 6,200 metres high in the US state of Alaska.

According to the Denali National Park and Preserve, park rangers received an emergency call on Thursday night reporting that the four mountaineers had fallen during their ascent near Denali Pass.

The accident reportedly occurred at an altitude of over 5,500 metres.

The remaining three members of the group initially attended to the climbers who had fallen before returning to the camp at an altitude of around 5,100 metres.
