Police are conducting further investigations into the incident, and the case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.
GEORGE TOWN: Three police personnel were detained yesterday to assist investigations into an alleged RM13,000 extortion case involving several men in Pulau Tikus on Aug 6.
Penang Police Chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said all three male police personnel, aged between 30 and 48, have been remanded for four days until Sept 16 to facilitate investigations.
“Police are conducting further investigations into the incident, and the case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
The incident reportedly involved the complainant and his three cousins. They went to Jalan Ladang Hong Seng, Pulau Tikus, to find a friend’s relative said to have been detained by police. The police stopped them at about 2.30 am.
The victims claimed they were handcuffed and threatened with being linked to a Telekom Malaysia cable theft case if they did not hand over money. They withdrew cash from an automated teller machine in Jalan Burma and handed RM13,000 to one of the suspects to secure their release.
