Three Sabahans make sanda finals

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah may get to win their first gold medal in the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma) today (Friday) as all three of Sabah’s wushu sanda exponents have made it to the finals in their respective categories on Thursday.

In the semi-finals held at the Dewan Wushu SSC in Petra Jaya, Kuching, Amirah Sofea Azlan defeated Intan Nur Alysha Sauty from Terengganu on points in the women’s 48kg category and she will be taking on Selangor’s Batrisya Izzati Mohd Nasir in the final today.

In the women’s 52kg, Dione Babyline Fely also won on points over her Johor opponent Lim You Mei to set up a gold medal match with Felicity Wong Xin Nee of Selangor today, while Fyenlly Himon is the only man to make it to the final after beating Terengganu’s Muhd Baihaqi Hilmi Mohd by split decision. His opponent in the final today is Sarawak’s Bong Shien Hiu.

Team manager Ronald James Tee Chee Xiang said it was an unexpected achievement as they had earlier only expected Amirah and Fyenlly to make it through to the final.

The Sabah contingent also have a chance to add another medal from lawn bowls today after Adilah Justine, Nur Zarifah Wajihah Zaidi, Nurafeqah Qhalisah Alham, Nuremilda Jazeemi Jali @ Jalit and Nurnajmi Jannah Jali @ Jalit qualified for the semi-final of the women’s fours event on Thursday.

They won a nail biting battle with a 12-11 score over their Terengganu opponents. They will be taking on Selangor for a place in the final this morning.

Apart from the 14 gold medals available in wushu, other sports to have their finals held today are cycling women’s individual and Team Mass Start finals (two golds), lawn bowls at Arena Lawn Bowls in Petra Jaya (four golds), Taekwondo at Perpaduan Indoor Stadium in Petra Jaya (five golds) and Tenpin Bowling at Megalanes Emart, Batu Kawa (two golds men and women doubles).

Meanwhile, World Muaythai Champion Angie Yan Jia Chi opened her campaign in the women’s wai kru event with a comfortable 9.60 -9.10 win over her Sarawak opponent Nur Iklil Zarifah Mohamad Affandi in the round of 16 held at the Paragon Hall in Bintulu on Thursday.
