FORMER world number one golfer Tiger Woods was arrested after his Land Rover rolled onto its side on a two-lane road near his Jupiter Island residence in Florida on March 27, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Reuters cited Sheriff John Budensiek saying the 50-year-old 15-time Major champion was overtaking a work truck pulling a trailer at high speed when he clipped the back of the trailer, causing his vehicle to overturn.
Woods managed to crawl out of the passenger side before law enforcement arrived.
A breathalyser test conducted at Martin County Jail detected no alcohol, leading investigators to believe any impairment may have been related to prescription medication.
Woods refused a urine test, an offence that carries a separate charge under Florida law.
He faces misdemeanour charges of driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Under state law, he must remain in custody for at least eight hours before being eligible for release on bond. No injuries were reported to Woods or the other driver involved in the incident.
US President Donald Trump commented on the crash, expressing concern for his friend. “I feel so badly. There was an accident. He’s got some difficulty. There was an accident, and that’s all I know. A very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man,” he said.
Woods had recently returned to competitive golf after a prolonged injury hiatus, having played on March 24, and has a history of serious injuries, including multiple leg fractures and ongoing back and knee issues. - March 28, 2026
