BINTULU (May 11): Youths must equip themselves with leadership, discipline, and a growth mindset to navigate today’s rapidly changing world, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The Bintulu MP said while technology, economic opportunities and global connectivity continue to expand, society is also facing rising cost of living, job uncertainty, mental health challenges, and weakening shared values.

“Success does not happen overnight, and young people should understand that meaningful progress requires patience and continuous effort.

“Young people should not focus only on comfort or material success, but be willing to learn, face challenges, and improve themselves,” he said when attending the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia Area Sarawak Convention Gala and Award Ceremony Luncheon 2026 on Sunday.

He reminded youths to avoid chasing glamour, overspending, or living beyond their means, as such habits would only create unnecessary pressure in the long run.

Tiong also stressed that in this digital era, youths must learn to analyse and fact-check information carefully instead of blindly following trends.

“With growing sensitivity around race and religion, young people must become a unifying force that promotes mutual respect, critical thinking and self-improvement in diverse societies like Sarawak and Malaysia,” he added.

Tiong said the government would continue supporting youth development through education, skills training, entrepreneurship and community empowerment programmes.

However, he emphasised that real progress requires cooperation between the government, private sector, non-governmental organisations and youth organisations such as JCI.

He hoped that programmes like the JCI Malaysia Area Sarawak Convention would continue creating meaningful community impact, strengthening unity and inspiring youths to turn ideas into action.

Tiong also congratulated the organisers and award recipients, urging winners to remain humble, continue growing and contribute positively to society.
