A 17-month-old baby girl sustained facial injuries, allegedly due to abuse by a babysitter at a daycare centre in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, Kajang, on Saturday, June 1st.
According to Kajang District Police chief ACP Mohd Zaid Hassan, the police received a report regarding the incident from the baby’s 26-year-old father at 7:36 p.m. The father, who works as an e-hailing driver, stated that when he went to pick up his daughter from the daycare centre, one of the babysitters informed him that another babysitter had roughly handled his child during feeding, resulting in an injury to the baby’s nose.
“Dissatisfied with the treatment and actions of the babysitter, the complainant decided to withdraw his child from the daycare centre,” said ACP Mohd Zaid Hassan. Following a medical examination and treatment at a hospital, a medical officer confirmed that the baby had suffered a 'soft tissue injury.' As a result, the babysitter in question was called in to provide a statement.
Further investigation revealed that the daycare centre had been operating for nearly three months but was believed to be without a valid operating license. The centre was caring for nine children with three babysitters who also served as teachers.
Mohd Zaid stated that the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. This section carries severe penalties, including a fine not exceeding RM50,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 20 years, or both, if convicted.
Authorities are taking this incident very seriously, emphasizing the need for strict compliance with childcare regulations to prevent such unfortunate events. The daycare centre’s lack of a valid operating license raises significant concerns about the oversight and standards of care provided.
The police are urging members of the public who have any information related to this case to come forward. Those with information can contact the investigating officer, Insp Muaz Mazlan, at 017-9788804.
This incident highlights the importance of thorough background checks and adherence to legal requirements for daycare centres to ensure the safety and well-being of children. It serves as a stark reminder to parents and guardians to remain vigilant and informed about the facilities they entrust with their children’s care.
Efforts are being made to ensure that justice is served and that the responsible parties are held accountable for their actions. The authorities are committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and preventing such incidents in the future.
