A young child died on Wednesday in south-western Germany when a mother left her car and forgot to take along her daughter, who was around 20 months old, police said.

The toddler was found lifeless in the car in Schorndorf near Stuttgart hours later. Her 44-year-old mother only discovered the girl upon returning to the vehicle in the afternoon, according to police.

An emergency doctor and the ambulance service were called to the scene but were unable to resuscitate the child.

Police said they were informed of the lifeless toddler at around 2:50 pm (1250 GMT). The authorities did not initially provide any further details as to how the mother could have forgotten her child in the car.

A police spokesman said further information would be released on Thursday.
