LABOR Secretary Francis Tolentino said on Wednesday that he fully supports the planned construction of Pax Silica hub in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac, noting its potential to generate nearly 1 million jobs for Filipinos.
”Do we support this? Definitely, 1,000 percent,” he said in Filipino and English. Spanning 1,600 hectares, the proposed hub serves as the centerpiece of a US-backed initiative. The project aims to establish secure, reliable supply chains across semiconductors, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and advanced manufacturing. Former senator Joey Lina and former communication secretary Sonny Coloma asked Tolentino of his opinion on the proposed project. ”Pax Silica is envisioned to really not jump-start but to create a better economic growth area similar to what Taiwan is experiencing right now,” Tolentino said. He said the project is expected to generate almost a million jobs, based on the information presented to visiting United States Under Secretary of Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg. Tolentino stressed that the project would align with the interests and skills of younger Filipinos, particularly those pursuing careers in information technology, engineering and computer-related professions. ”We’re looking at microchips and advanced technology which are more aligned with what Gen Z and today’s youth are interested in, especially those involved in computer-related fields,” Tolentino said in Filipino and English. Tolentino added that for the project to materialize, the government must ensure the availability of key infrastructure, including reliable electricity and water supply. ”What we need to establish now is the right infrastructure, particularly adequate power and water supply,” he said in Filipino and English.He suggested harnessing renewable energy sources, including geothermal and wind power in nearby areas.
