Toto Wolff tells 'lunatics' accusing Mercedes of favouritism to 'watch Teletubbies' instead

Toto Wolff has hit out at “lunatics” accusing Mercedes of favouring Kimi Antonelli over George Russell in the title race, telling them to “watch Teletubbies” instead.

Antonelli holds an 84-point lead over Russell with just seven rounds of the Formula One championship remaining.

The advantage opened up in Malaysia last weekend, where a late engine failure dealt Russell the latest piece of misfortune in his season. The Italian now has one hand on a maiden world title.

Yet the 20-year-old's run to the brink of the championship has prompted claims that Mercedes have handed him preferential treatment.

Mercedes team principal Wolff labelled that assertion “brainless”.

Speaking during this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix, Wolff said: “I don’t know what is going on. Do they think I have a button which says ‘George engine failure now?’

“This is where social media goes, people hiding behind their screens. Sometimes when I read what people write, I find it hilarious.

“These people really contribute to my own entertainment when they are abusing the team. Zero understanding and respect for people who come up with these things. Rather than watching Formula One they should do Teletubbies or Mickey Mouse.”

Antonelli has been part of the Mercedes set-up since childhood, joining the team's junior programme at the age of 11.

The young prodigy was steadfastly backed through a difficult debut season in the sport last year.

By Russell's own admission, Antonelli has been the best driver in just his second season in the sport, even allowing for the British driver being on the wrong side of luck on a number of occasions.

Russell, 28, has a long association with the Silver Arrows of his own. He joined the team in 2017 and has driven for them full-time in F1 since 2022.

This season represented his first realistic shot at a championship, and he began it as the firm pre-season favourite in the grid's dominant car. It has not worked out that way.

Wolff was keen to stress his continued support for Russell as his title hopes have dwindled.

“I have always tried to be the most balanced and transparent with the drivers,” Wolff added.

“I took it as my challenge to always keep it balanced – and it was not easy with Lewis (Hamilton) and Nico (Rosberg) back in the day.

“Integrity and respect is something that is important for me. We have had Kimi since he was 11, he’s an integral part of the team.

“George has been with us since he was 17. He is someone I feel a lot of emotion and compassion for. We are very close.

“We spend a lot of time with Carmen (Russell’s fiancee) and Susie (Wolff) off the track. We travel together, we have coffee together, that is why it is annoying to have lunatics with no understanding of how the relationship works coming up with these kind of accusations.
