Kota Kinabalu: The Australian parents of an 11-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted by a tourism worker while on holiday in Pulau Mabul two years ago are relieved that the predator will spend the next 12 years in prison.

The Tawau High Court in July this year jailed the undocumented Filipino worker 10 years and receive two strokes of the cane plus another two years if he fails to pay RM20,000 compensation to the victim.

Nielhan Abdullah, 25, was charged under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences against Children Act 2017 for committing the offence in a room at a resort on Mabul at 7.45pm on Oct. 2, 2022.

The parents who had been following the case via Daily Express online said they were dismayed to learn that there was an appeal for a shorter prison sentence.
