Tenom: The TR8 padi variety has the potential to produce yields of up to 10 tonnes per hectare based on results recorded in several areas, said Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.
He said about 67 hectares in the area had been planted with TR8, with statistics over the past three years showing yields could reach 10 tonnes per hectare in Kampung Kalibatang Lama, Kalibatang Baru, Kuala Tomani and Merais.
Jamawi, who is also Melalap Assemblyman, said his inspection of samples found between 165 and 185 grains on each panicle, indicating potential yields of about eight to nine tonnes per hectare.
He said the State Government would continue assisting farmers in the area, with two tractors for ploughing and harvesting approved this year, while planting machines, smaller harvesters and five fertiliser spraying machines are planned for next year.
“There's no need to go to Sekinchan, Perak or the padi granary in Kedah. Come to Kuala Tomani. We have proven that padi yields can reach 10 tonnes per hectare,” he said after officiating the harvest at the Kalibatang Baru Certified Padi Seed Satellite Area here Monday.
