The busy intersection connecting Sarai Road, Cinema Road, Nayi Abadi Chowk and Gaushala Road has emerged as one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in Phagwara, causing daily inconvenience to commuters and local residents.
According to residents, narrow roads, the growing number of e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws, roadside encroachments and inadequate traffic management have led to frequent traffic jams throughout the day. Locals say the problem is not due to a lack of action alone but also the absence of a systematic traffic plan and regular monitoring.
The junction witnesses heavy movement from all four directions, often bringing traffic to a complete standstill. Residents complain that the situation worsens during school and office hours, resulting in long queues of vehicles and delays for commuters.
It is estimated that around 500 e-rickshaws and 250 auto-rickshaws operate in the city. Many residents believe that the unchecked movement of e-rickshaws on major roads contributes significantly to congestion, putting additional pressure on already narrow streets. Encroachments by shopkeepers, including goods displayed outside shops and illegal parking, further reduce road space and obstruct traffic
Residents have urged the administration to establish designated stands and fixed routes for e-rickshaws to streamline traffic movement. They said that while the number of e-rickshaws continues to rise, there is no proper regulation of their operations. As a result, many vehicles move freely through busy markets and main roads, worsening congestion.
Locals also pointed out that increasing encroachments in commercial areas are a major cause of traffic jams. They stressed that strict enforcement of rules and regular monitoring are essential for any long-term solution.
Phagwara SP Madhvi Sharma said that the police and municipal authorities are regularly conducting anti-encroachment drives. She stated that action is being taken against violators and cases are being registered where necessary.
Meanwhile, RTO Kapurthla Harkaran Singh has urged the administration, municipal corporation and police to work together to restore order in the city’s markets and improve traffic management by regulating e-rickshaw entry and movement in congested areas.
