In a tragic incident today at kilometre 77.5 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) near Gurun, three military personnel lost their lives in a road crash. The victims, all belonging to the 3rd Battalion of the Pengkalan Hulu Border Regiment in Perak, were a Sergeant aged 30, a Lance Corporal aged 39, and a Corporal aged 40. The fatal accident occurred at 10:30 am and resulted in the soldiers sustaining serious body and head injuries, leading to their immediate demise at the scene.

The collision involved three military trucks and a commercial lorry, all heading northbound. The military vehicles were en route from the Pengkalan Hulu Camp to the 30th Brigade Camp in Perlis. Simultaneously, a 31-year-old man was driving the commercial lorry from Kulim to Alor Setar. According to ACP Zaidy Che Hassan, the Kuala Muda district police chief, the tragic incident unfolded when the military lorries halted in the emergency lane due to a breakdown. The commercial lorry then collided with the rearmost military truck, causing a chain reaction.

The collision sequence involved the commercial lorry striking the middle military truck before moving forward and colliding with the front military truck. Unfortunately, the three soldiers had disembarked and were at the side of the last military truck when the accident transpired. The commercial lorry driver, aged 31, suffered severe injuries and was promptly transported to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the commercial lorry lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision with the military truck. The incident is now under investigation according to Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

This somber event highlights the risks and challenges faced by military personnel even during routine movements. The loss of three dedicated individuals serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the unpredictable nature of accidents, regardless of the circumstances.
