Tun Daim Zainuddin, a prominent figure and former finance minister, faced legal proceedings in the Sessions Court as he was charged with the failure to disclose his assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Asserting his innocence, the 86-year-old entered a plea of not guilty under Section 36(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act during the court session.
Section 36(2) of the MACC Act specifically deals with the offense of willfully neglecting or failing to comply with a notice issued by the MACC, requiring individuals to provide a written statement on oath or affirmation regarding their assets. In the event of a conviction, Daim could face a maximum prison term of five years and a fine of up to RM100,000.
The alleged incident took place on December 13, 2023, at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya. Daim was accused of knowingly presenting a written statement on oath that did not align with the terms of a MACC notice issued on November 8 of the same year. This notice had been served on him on November 14, and the charge specifically pertains to his failure to declare assets as outlined in a document referred to as Lampiran A.
The list of assets not disclosed is comprehensive, including ownership stakes in 38 companies, seven vehicles, and 19 plots of land spread across Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Kedah. Additionally, Daim was accused of not declaring ownership of six properties. Further intensifying the allegations, he was charged with the omission of declaring an Amanah Saham Berhad and Amanah Saham Nasional bank account.
This legal development underscores the significance of financial transparency and adherence to anti-corruption measures. The legal repercussions for such offenses serve as a robust deterrent, reinforcing the expectation of accountability even for individuals who have held esteemed positions in the government, such as Tun Daim Zainuddin. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to maintain integrity and combat corruption within public offices.
