Train services cancelled amid major power outage

  • An electricity supply failure at the Manchester Rail Operating Centre, near Ashburys station, has caused major disruption to train services across the Midlands and north-west England.
  • The outage severely impacted signalling systems, leading to widespread cancellations and delays for numerous operators including CrossCountry Trains, Transport for Wales, Northern, and TransPennine Express.
  • National Rail advised passengers travelling with affected services, such as Avanti West Coast and East Midlands Railway, to expect significant disruption until at least the end of the day and to check before travelling.
  • Transport secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed she is receiving regular updates as Network Rail works to resolve the power outage, urging passengers to verify their journeys due to expected disruption.
