Car accidents have caused an 85-kilometre (53-mile) traffic jam on the Trans-Siberian Highway near Lake Baikal due to snowy conditions.

Drivers got stuck for hours, and truckers for days, on the road connecting Siberia and Russia's Far East, with some running out of food, water and fuel.

The temperature dropped down to -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit) degrees.

Police sent additional patrols to direct traffic while local authorities sanded the most dangerous road sections.
