Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United are clubs to watch in the finals days of the January transfer window. Erling Haaland has signed a bumper new extension at Manchester City, while it appears that Benjamin Sesko will not be an option for the Gunners as they target a new striker.

Mikel Arteta is also targeting a new midfielder, with Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi appearing to be set on the Emirates over Anfield or with Man City at the Etihad.

Arne Slot’s Reds continue to negotiate with soon-to-be out-of-contract trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk, with the right-back linked with a possible free transfer to Real Madrid.

While Manchester United are looking to sell Marcus Rashford, Kyle Walker could be on his way out of Man City, though, after informing Pep Guardiola of a desire to explore options away from the club and Milan and Inter are battling for the right back.

Elsewhere, Chelsea, currently in a rotten spell of form under Enzo Maresca, could negotiate a swap deal with Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel, inserting out-of-favour striker Christopher Nkunku into a deal.

Further to those comments from Potter, here’s a round-up of West Ham’s rumoured targets.

Reports emerged yesterday that the Hammers had submitted a £40m bid for Villa’s Jhon Duran, which was rejected.

Evan Ferguson remains a loan target too, as does Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati, who was previously on loan at Brighton.

Andre Silva of RB Leipzig is the player who has been most strongly linked, while there are reports that Nice’s Evann Guessand is also a target.

Hoffenheim forward Mergim Berish has been linked too, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky DE.

Arsenal consider £70m move for Benjamin Sesko

10:09

,

Jack Rathborn

Arsenal are contemplating a £70m move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

A January transfer window move could boost the Gunners after a recent blip, which has hit their title hopes.

The Sun claims a loan could be an option, though that appears unlikely given the calibre of player, but a permanent move will push Mikel Arteta’s side to dig deep into their pockets.

The Mirror reports that Barcelona are also interested in the Slovenia forward, but may struggle to make the financial package work.

Spurs latest

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Spurs are one side who seem to have a lack of concrete rumours despite a difficult injury situation, though there are reports linking them to a few players.

In terms of attackers, Randal Kolo Muani was linked with the Lilywhites, but after his move to Juventus, Spurs have to look elsewhere. To that end, they’ve been linked with Lille’s Jonathan David, as well as Nice striker Evann Guessand, Rayan Cherki of Lyon, and Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati.

Postecoglou’s side have also been linked with Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Byran Mbeumo, but it is thought that all of these deals would be too difficult to pull off.

In other positions, Spurs have been linked with Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi in defence.

Parker hails young Trafford as future England great

Saturday 18 January 2025 21:25

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Scott Parker hailed James Trafford as a future England goalkeeper after he made two late penalty saves to help Burnley hang on for a goalless draw with Sunderland that leaves them level on points with Championship leaders Leeds.

In a remarkable finish at Turf Moor, Trafford twice denied Wilson Isidor from the spot, first in the 86th minute and then in the sixth minute of time added on, with the Burnley faithful celebrating their eighth goalless draw of the season as if it had been a win.

Trafford has been a penalty hero before, saving a stoppage-time spot-kick against Spain as England won the final of the European Under-21s Championships 1-0 in 2023. The 22-year-old received a first senior call-up last March, and Parker believes he will one day be a regular for his country.

"I think so," the former England captain said. "In terms of what we've seen from him this is a boy with absolutely humungous potential. I still think there's so much more to come from him."

Trafford has endured difficulties early in his career. Installed as Burnley's number one at the start of last season after a £15million move from Manchester City, he lost his place as the Clarets struggled in the top flight, but seems to have come back from the experience stronger for it.

"I've got nothing but positives to say about James," Parker added. "When I first came in there were some struggles and he came out the back of a season last year that was difficult for Traf, a young boy, going into that division, he had some hard times.

"But this is a special keeper with absolutely huge potential. You see that confidence. He believes in himself and to get to that top, top level you have to have that certain belief, that arrogance. He's got that and he backs it up."

Marmoush on the verge of joining Man City

Saturday 18 January 2025 18:12

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Omar Marmoush seemed on the verge of joining Manchester City on Friday as his current club Eintracht Frankfurt confirmed it was in talks with City and said the Egyptian striker would probably leave.

Marmoush was not in the squad as Frankfurt beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the Bundesliga but joined his teammates on the field after the game for an apparent farewell as fans cheered.

"I've said often before that we're in discussions with a club. In the end, it's Manchester City and we've really been in close contact with them for one or two days now," sporting director Markus Krïsche told broadcaster DAZN ahead of the game. A move to City would be a "huge opportunity" for Marmoush, he added.

"We'll see how it develops in the coming hours and perhaps days, but there is now a very high probability that he will be leaving us."

German broadcaster Sky reported on Friday that any deal for Marmoush could involve a fee of 75 million euros and another five million euros in possible bonuses.

Marmoush has been among the top scorers in European soccer this season, racking up 15 in 17 games in the Bundesliga, one less than top scorer Harry Kane, and 20 from 26 games across all competitions.

A move to City would continue a rapid rise to stardom for Marmoush, who signed for Frankfurt on a free transfer in 2023 from Wolfsburg, where he'd scored only five goals the season before. His contract with Frankfurt runs through 2027.

Lawrence Ostlere

Japan midfielder Aemu Oyama has joined Manchester City on a two-and-a-half-year contract, the Women's Super League side announced on Saturday.

Oyama, one of Japan's most promising young talents, will join the English club from Waseda University, becoming City's second acquisition of the January transfer window, alongside German defender Rebecca Knaak.

"My dream is to play in the Champions League. I'd like to be able to contribute to the team as soon as I can. And as a young player, now that I'm in this team I want to play as many games as possible," the 20-year-old Oyama said in a statement.

"Aemu is a very technically gifted player. There's a real buzz about her. She's already broken ground in Japan at a very young age and will be an exciting addition to the squad here in Manchester," City's Women's Director of Football Therese Sjogran added.

Oyama made her professional debut with Tokyo Verdy Beleza in Japan's top-flight WE League in 2021, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the league's history at 17.

She was also a key player for Japan's U-20 national team, who finished runners-up at the U-20 Women's World Cup last year. She scored in a 7-0 group stage victory over New Zealand.

Mikel Arteta provides update on Arsenal's transfer plans

Saturday 18 January 2025 13:30

,

Harry Latham-Coyle

Since Bukayo Saka's hamstring tear on December 21, Mikel Arteta has also lost Gabriel Jesus to a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury.

It is set to force the Spaniard's hand in the transfer market with Kai Havertz, who has failed to score in his last three appearances, left standing as the club's lone recognised striker.

And, speaking prior to his side's Premier League clash against Aston Villa at the Emirates on Saturday, Arteta was asked if he may have to change his summer-spending plans if Arsenal splash out on a new striker in the next fortnight.

He continued: "No one can give you assurances in this industry because it is related to performance, what we achieve, how we finish the season.

"But if a player is injured, what can you do? He has no value, he cannot perform. It is a really difficult scenario and on top of that you have to add somebody else. It's not easy.

"We have a plan, we look at the squad, how we are going to evolve it, what we have in the academy, how we are going to change and adapt. Either we are really bad at planning or nobody could see we would have that many injuries, so you have to adapt whatever the plan is."

Pep Guardiola admits disbelief over length of Erling Haaland deal

Saturday 18 January 2025 12:30

Harry Latham-Coyle

Pep Guardiola admits he could scarcely believe the news Erling Haaland has signed a new nine-and-half year contract at Manchester City.

The prolific Norway striker, who has scored 111 goals in 126 appearances for City, has committed himself to the reigning Premier League champions until 2034.

It is a deal of unprecedented length in the English domestic game and City manager Guardiola, who recently agreed his own two-year extension, thought he had misheard when told the details by director of football Txiki Begiristain.

The Liverpool transfer problem their Premier League title rivals wish they had

Saturday 18 January 2025 11:00

,

Pete Hall

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia would have been a nice luxury to have, but in the cold light of day, Arne Slot would have struggled to even fit the Paris Saint-Germain-bound Georgian wizard into his multi-faceted lineup in the coming months.

After Diogo Jota having stepped off the bench to earn Liverpool a vital 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, where defeat could have left the gap at the top a nerve-jangling four points, Slot flexed his squad muscles once more.

The new Liverpool boss’ in-game management has, so far, belied his inexperience on our shores. In 16 of 31 matches, the Reds have not held the lead at the interval and still stand on the precipice of a second Premier League title, at a canter. It helps when he can turn to game-changers of Jota's ilk in reserve.

Yet, the transfer rumours continue to circulate. But if Jota, when fit, cannot get a start, signing another forward would only give Slot a headache he does not need to create for himself.

Manchester United set transfer demand for Alejandro Garnacho to Napoli based on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s fee

Saturday 18 January 2025 10:30

,

Miguel Delaney

Napoli are pressing ahead with a move for Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho, as they seek to reshape the attack after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's expected move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Old Trafford hierarchy are willing to listen to all offers this January, even for homegrown products, due to the club's highly restricted circumstances with PSR. Ruben Amorim wants to begin to overhaul of the squad, but can't without sales.

Napoli have already started some work on a potential deal, and Garnacho is understood to be open to a move to the Italian club, although personal terms are yet to be agreed. The player's pace fits manager Antonio Conte's ideal for how he wants the team to play.

“He’s really important to Leipzig at the moment. They don’t have an intention of selling him,” added Ornstein.

Premier League clubs avoid PSR charges for 2023/24 but one team still at risk

Saturday 18 January 2025 06:00

,

Mike Jones

All 20 Premier League sides have avoided charges relating to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2023/24 season after the league deemed every club to have been financially compliant.

PSR stipulates that clubs cannot post losses of more than £105m over a three-year period, with most clubs required to submit their accounts for the 2023/24 season by 31 December.

This year, the Premier League has adjudged that all clubs have adhered to the rules – in 2024, the league charged both Everton and Nottingham Forest with PSR breaches, with the Merseyside club later being given an eight-point reduction, while Forest were docked four points.
