Clubs across Europe are entering the home straight of the January transfer window as they look to make final additions before the business end of the season.

Tottenham have produced perhaps the shock of the window so far after it emerged that they were plotting a move for Liverpool stalwart Andy Robertson, whose contract is up at the end of the season. The Scotland captain has been at Anfield since 2017 and has won everything there is to win, but has lost his starting spot this term following the arrival of Milos Kerkez.

Elsewhere, Premier League leaders Arsenal are plotting a bid for Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, after Ethan Nwaneri completed his loan move to Marseille, while Chelsea are reportedly targeting a loan move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Douglas Luiz alongside trying to seal a deal for promising French defender Jeremy Jacquet.

However, Liverpool may also have entered the race for Jacquet, with the Reds tracking several centre-back targets, including Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven as well as Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck. Further forward, Arne Slot’s side are being linked with RB Leipzig and Ivory Coast star Yan Diomande, while Manchester United are tracking several midfield targets, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek among those linked after the news that Casemiro will be leaving at the end of the season.

Nuno: West Ham still need options in the transfer market

12:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Nuno Espirito Santo says West Ham still need new signings to maintain their survival bid after they boosted their chances of beating the drop with a rousing 3-1 win over Sunderland.

All looked lost for Nuno’s increasingly beleaguered side less than two weeks ago when they slipped seven points adrift of safety.

But they backed up last weekend’s welcome win at Tottenham as goals from Crysencio Summerville and Mateus Fernandes, either side of Jarrod Bowen’s penalty, moved them to within just two points of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, the rescue effort is continuing behind the scenes, with Argentinian midfielder Guido Rodriguez missing from the squad ahead of a move to Valencia and Fulham winger Adama Traore close to joining.

Lucas Paqueta was absent again amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future, but there was an appearance on the bench for the lesser-spotted James Ward-Prowse, having previously been frozen out by Nuno.

Sunderland's Arthur Masuaku set to be lent to Lens

11:40 , PA

Sunderland defender Arthur Masuaku is close to completing a loan move to Ligue 1 Lens for the remainder of the season.

The Press Association understands an agreement between the two clubs is in place and that the 32-year-old DR Congo international is due to travel to France to seal the switch.

Former West Ham and Besiktas full-back Masuaku joined the Black Cats on a free transfer last summer as head coach Regis Le Bris reshaped his squad for life in the Premier League, but he has made only four senior appearances for the club to date.

He returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he started twice as his country went out to Algeria in the last 16, desperate for regular football and will now hope to play his part in high-flying Lens' push to deny Paris Saint Germain a fifth successive league title.

If Ajax get the green light, they will finalise a six-month contract, with Zinchenko’s long-term future then decided in the summer.

Kobbie Mainoo is Man United’s future again – and he has Michael Carrick to thank

09:45 , Richard Jolly

The beginning of the end for one, a new beginning for another. Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo were not Manchester United’s midfield double act for most of this season – not when Ruben Amorim would not start the latter in the Premier League – and will not be for the long term. Not when the Brazilian confirmed he will go when his contract expires at the end of the season.

But then, until Amorim’s sacking, it seemed that Mainoo may have been exiting earlier. There were reasons for him to leave on loan, with Napoli apparently interested. It represented a volte-face, then, and perhaps a sign that Amorim recognised his time was almost up, when he suddenly described the Mancunian as the “future” of United.

Fulham must fight to keep Wilson, says Silva

02:00 , Will Castle

Fulham manager Marco Silva warned the club must do everything they can to keep Harry Wilson after his eighth Premier League goal of the season beat Brighton.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer and it is likely there will be offers to try and tempt him away from Craven Cottage, increasingly so following a brilliant stoppage-time free-kick that sealed a dramatic 2-1 triumph.

It was the latest twist in what is becoming a remarkable breakout campaign for the former Liverpool midfielder, and Silva acknowledged the "fight" is on to keep him on the books as the weeks count down on his current deal.

"We are in the fight, we are trying to keep him," said Silva. "If you ask me if it's going to be easy, I say it's not going to be easy.

"The more he scores, many more clubs are going to be around him. This is football business. When a player goes to the end of his contract, this kind of thing is going to happen.

"I know he's happy in our club and how much he's enjoying the moment. It's up to the club to do the maximum to keep him."

Saturday 24 January 2026 17:51 , Luke Baker

Farke: I won't roll out the red carpet for Buonanotte

Saturday 24 January 2026 16:25 , Will Castle

Facundo Buonanotte has been told by Leeds boss Daniel Farke that there will be no easy route into his starting line-up.

Leeds' summer move for the Brighton midfielder was hijacked by Chelsea, but his loan spell at Stamford Bridge was cut short earlier this month to allow him to join Leeds for the rest of the season.

Farke said: "Facundo is a very young, very talented player, otherwise you don't earn caps for Argentina's national team. He's a very skilful player, who has this special creativity that is quite rare at the top level.

"There are many reasons we wanted him because he has several skills we were missing a little bit. But I'm tempted not to praise him too much because he'll think he's already Lionel Messi.

"There are also challenges in his game where he has to be there. In the last few months he has not played too much football.

"I won't roll the red carpet for a new signing. It's up to him to deliver. It's not an easy route (into the starting line-up). He's in the challenging role and has to stand up to this challenge, earn his place and show he's capable of shining."

Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko and why big-money strikers are struggling

Saturday 24 January 2026 13:24 , Luke Baker

Earlier in 2025, Manchester United were stunned when they were told a deal for Benjamin Sesko might be on. That was because they were one of many clubs that fully expected the Slovenian to go to Arsenal. That had been the word for over a year.

It is instead Viktor Gyokeres who occupies the Arsenal striker position. Or, at least, he has occupied it. Gyokeres’ superb goal against Inter Milan couldn’t have been more timely, since Gabriel Jesus scored twice to bolster the debate that the Brazilian should be Mikel Arteta’s starting No 9.

The fact that Sesko had been the alternative, however, is no longer part of that debate. The younger forward has endured similar struggles.

Sean Dyche responds to Douglas Luiz to Chelsea speculation

Saturday 24 January 2026 12:15 , Luke Baker

Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche was coy on whether on-loan midfielder Douglas Luiz could be heading to Chelsea.

The Brazilian is on loan at the City Ground from Juventus but has struggled for game time under Dyche due to injury and also perhaps because the deal turns permanent if certain criteria is met.

Reports from west London suggest Chelsea are lining up a swoop this month, but Dyche did not say much.

"He is a very good player and I said when we played him in Europe (before Christmas) we probably rushed him back, but because of his experience he has used that wisely to be back," he said.

"It doesn't surprise me there is interest from other clubs in good players. That's the nature of the business.

"It's a doubled-edged sword. You sort of want people interested in your players, that means they are doing a good job and are good players, but you don't because you don't want them coming knocking on the door.”

Alvarez, who moved to Madrid from Manchester City for £82m in 2024, has scored 45 goals in 80 games for Atleti.

The Spanish club would reportedly demand a fee in excess of €100m to sell the player.

Alongside Arsenal, both Barcelona and Chelsea are said to be tracking the Argentina international.

Casemiro has announced he will leave Manchester United in the summer after the club decided not to renew his contract.

United will lose the £63m signing on a free transfer but believe the money saved from paying his sizeable wages can be reinvested into the squad.

The Brazil captain decided to reveal the news now to help him prepare for next season and to prevent speculation he would get a new deal at Old Trafford.

Tottenham have made an approach to Liverpool for left-back Andy Robertson and are in preliminary talks about a deal.

Liverpool are considering the offer for their vice-captain, who is out of contract in the summer, and are yet to decide whether to let the 31-year-old leave.

Robertson revealed last week that he has had talks with Liverpool about a new deal but also wants to play more first-team football after losing his place to summer signing Milos Kerkez this season.
