The transfer window has shut after a mini opening ahead of the summer’s Club World Cup. The window will re-open on 16 June and clubs are continuing to make deals in the interim.

Liverpool are making plans for a Florian Wirtz medical after agreeing a £116.5m deal for the German superstar. The Premier League champions, who have already brought in Jeremie Frimpong, will make Wirtz their club-record signing after agreeing a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

Manchester United, who have secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m, are negotiating with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo, who would prefer a move to Old Trafford over Tottenham Hotspur even as Thomas Frank takes charges in north London.

Arsenal hope to bring in Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Arteta has made RB Leipzig striker, Benjamin Sesko, their No 1 target for a striker. Chelsea, meanwhile, have been rebuffed in their efforts to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens.

Miguel Delaney

Bryan Mbeumo would still prefer to move to Manchester United over Tottenham Hotspur, even with Thomas Frank now taking charge in north London.

United had an opening bid of £45m, plus add-ons, turned down for the Brentford forward, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season for Frank’s side.

With Frank now in charge at Spurs, there have been reports that the new head coach could look to bring Mbeumo with him. However, it is understood that Mbeumo’s preference is still United.

Why Club World Cup could be transformative for a new Chelsea

15:12

,

Chris Wilson

And this from Richard Jolly on Chelsea, one of the teams who stand to benefit from this summer’s tournament...

Thomas Tuchel was musing about the knock-on effect of the Club World Cup on next season’s title race. “I think it will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there,” he said.

What Tuchel did not mention is that Chelsea, disadvantaged as a result, qualified for the Club World Cup because of him. It feels a very different era given that Enzo Maresca is the fifth man to manage them since – Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor, Frank Lampard and Mauricio Pochettino are the others – and that Reece James is the only player to take the field in Tuchel’s 2021 Champions League final victory who is in the squad they have taken to the United States.

Leverkusen looking at McAtee as Wirtz replacement?

14:41

,

Chris Wilson

Man Utd enter race for Ekitike?

14:29

,

Chris Wilson

Manchester United have reported entered the race for coveted French striker Hugo Ekitike, who currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sky Sports reports that United have enquired as to the terms of a deal, with the German club insisting on €100m to lure the 22-year-old away.

Chelsea and Liverpool are the Premier League clubs who have previously registered an interest in Ekitike.

Mbeumo said to be 'intrigued' by Spurs interest

14:16

,

Chris Wilson

According to Sky Sports, Bryan Mbeumo is now “more intrigued by a Spurs move now that Thomas Frank has been appointed head coach”, with Brentford yet to agree any deal with Manchester United.

The Cameroon international played under Frank since 2019, making over 200 appearances for the Bees.

How will Wirtz fit in at Anfield?

14:01

,

Lawrence Ostlere

One of Wirtz’s most coveted qualities is his versatility, which has seen him feature on all across the forward line for his club and country.

The 22-year-old is best on the left or in central areas, which will have contributed to Liverpool’s interest (with the presence of Mohamed Salah meaning the right-wing spot is locked down for the foreseeable future).

For Leverkusen, he has featured most frequently in a left attacking midfield role, often tasked with spotting gaps and unlocking opposition defences.

His 13 Bundesliga assists last season show he has the eye for a key pass, though he has also displayed dribbling ability of a level that is rare in attacking midfielders, with both assets contributing to another exciting dimension in the Liverpool attack – and one that may be needed as they continue to face low blocks next season.

And Wirtz’s workrate – something that set Liverpool’s players apart last season – is admirable too. He was in the top 10 for duels won and interceptions in the Bundesliga in 2023/24, with an average distance covered of 7.6 miles (12.3km) and 33 sprints per match putting him in the top five for those metrics too.

Tottenham have held initial discussions with Brentford about Bryan Mbeumo, Sky Sports reports.

The forward has been heavily linked with Manchester United but Brentford have so far rebuffed their approaches, leaving the door ajar.

Spurs have some confidence in turning Mbeumo’s head after hiring Brentford manager Thomas Frank to replace Ange Postecoglou.

How can Liverpool afford Wirtz?

12:53

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Liverpool have already announced a deal worth almost £30m to sign Wirtz’s Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, so a deal for the German could take their spending to around £150m this summer.

They are also interested in left-back Milos Kerkez, with Bournemouth valuing the Hungary international at £45m.

How can they afford such spending? Well for a start, the Reds spent almost nothing (in relative terms) last summer, with the £12.5m signing of Federico Chiesa the only fee they paid all window.

In addition, the club have been helped by their revenues and player sale profits, including prize money for winning the league and taking part in the Champions League, as well as a new kit deal with Adidas.

This summer, sales could yet provide even more room for more signings. Wirtz’s arrival could lead to Harvey Elliott leaving with Liverpool, who have a self-sustaining model, conscious that sales can help them afford to buy.

Neymar to join Mourinho in Turkey?

12:43

,

Lawrence Ostlere

This would be a fun one – Jose Mourinho and Neymar paired together at Fenerbahce. Will it happen?

Where will Semenyo land?

12:29

,

Lawrence Ostlere

It seems highly likely that Antoine Semenyo will be leaving Bournemouth in this window as their are plenty of clubs interested in taking him.

The latest are Tottenham with talkSPORT saying the north London side have been told it will take £70m to get a deal done.

The former Bristol City man has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United in recent months after a fine season on the south coast.

Why Liverpool won the race for Florian Wirtz

11:59

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Manchester City were briefly seen as the favourites to sign Wirtz, but it quickly transpired that the German wanted to move to Anfield. He was persuaded by Liverpool’s vision for him and rejected more lucrative offers because of his desire to move to Anfield.

City were quick to rule out signing the German too, stating that the deal was too expensive to proceed with, and the club later signed French playmaker Rayan Cherki for around £30m.

As for Bayern, the club were long said to be Wirtz’s top choice for a move, though Liverpool quickly overtook them as favourites.

Several factors will have played a part in this change, with reports suggesting that Leverkusen were reluctant to sell to a domestic rival, though there were also doubts in Munich about the fee involved.

"If I'm honest, I don't know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying now," said Max Eberl, Bayern’s director of sport.

The Real Madrid question Alonso must solve ahead of Club World Cup

11:25

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Florentino Perez can already see a new place in history. The Real Madrid president has naturally watched all the archive footage of predecessor Santiago Bernabeu winning the first European Cup, in 1956, and now wants to emulate him by winning the first Club World Cup. Perez has been making grand proclamations about it fitting Madrid’s grandeur, as they prepare for the United States.

In order to do that, however, he also had to face up to the present and the future. He realised Madrid had to change, and not just as regards the identity of the manager. So did the very football identity of the team.

PSG want to keep Barcola this summer

10:34

,

Lawrence Ostlere

It sounds like Bradley Barcola isn’t going anywhere this summer, despite reports that he would be interested in a move away as he fights for more minutes.

The PSG attacker has found himself competing with Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for playing time and had to settle for a substitute appearance in the Champions League final.

But PSG apparently do not plan on selling the 22-year-old:

That’s according to The Athletic, which reports that the 22-year-old defender is wanted in Germany, with an expected price tag of £40m. Liverpool are thought to be reluctant to sell Quansah, although selling an academy talent would add some PSR headroom.

Man Utd dealt Gyokeres blow

09:58

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Manchester United will not be able to purchase Viktor Gyokeres for £59m (€70m) after claims from Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas.

Previous rumours had seemingly revealed that Gyokeres had a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with the club that he would be allowed to leave this summer for a price lower than his £85m (€100m) release clause.

But, Varandas has squashed those rumours and with it probably Manchester United’s interest in signing the forward.

“I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m plus €10m because I never promised that,” Varandas said.

“To this day Sporting has not had an offer for Gyokeres — neither today nor last season.”

Robertson talks up Wirtz

08:39

,

Lawrence Ostlere

Andy Robertson has spoken about Florian Wirtz who is rumoured to be on the way to Liverpool for a record breaking fee this summer.

“He was excellent against us. He was the one causing problems, in the half space, running in behind, he can mix it up,” Robertson said.

“That was enough for me to see he’s going to be a top player. In the Germany team against us he was excellent. If we get him through, an exciting talent through the door.

“We have already got a lot of exciting talent. He’s a right good player and he’ll only help us. If he does get through the door we’ll be excited to play with him.”

"If I'm honest, I don't know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying now," Max Eberl said, speaking to Sky Germany.

"Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player. We could have imagined signing him. But when a door closes, another opens."

Eberl tipped Wirtz to “make his mark” at Anfield. “He is an outstanding player.”

United turn attention to Ekitike

08:07

Lawrence Ostlere

Manchester United’s pursuit of a striker has so far seen them enquire about Victor Gyokeres and be linked with Osimhen. But a new report from Sky Sports says they are seriously considering Hugo Ekitike.

The tall 23-year-old forward scored 22 goals last season in 48 games for Frankfurt, but he will come at a cost, with suggestions of an £85m price tag.

Liverpool eye Osimhen amid Premier League interest

Victor Osimhen feels like a name who will dominate the summer rumour mill. He has been linked with Manchester United in recent days and now the Napoli striker – who spent last year on loan at Galatasaray, scoring 37 goals in 41 games – is on Liverpool’s radar, according to givemesport.

Darwin Nunez’s future is uncertain after a hit-and-miss (mostly miss) season, and the Reds are on the look out for a new focal point.

Osimhen certainly seems set for a new destination this summer. Will he be playing in the Premier League come August?
